Territory renews push for safari crocodile hunts
By Lisa Mosley

Updated June 14, 2012 16:54:45

The Northern Territory Government has renewed its push to allow the safari hunting of saltwater crocodiles.

It is calling for public comment on a plan to trial safari hunts in the Top End.

The Federal Government rejected a previous plan but has said it would revisit the issue.

Chief Minister Paul Henderson says safari hunting of the animals would create Indigenous jobs, with more than 70 per cent of crocodile habitat being on Aboriginal-held lands.

For almost 11 years, the Territory Government has been lobbying the Commonwealth to allow trophy hunting of saltwater crocodiles.

Mr Henderson says the Commonwealth has agreed to amend the crocodile management plan for the Territory to include a trial of trophy hunting for saltwater crocodiles for two years, allowing up to 50 animals of more than 3.5 metres in length to be killed.

He says there is an abundance of crocodiles in the Territory, and safari hunting would be a much needed boost to the ailing tourism industry.

"Come to the Territory and bag a croc," he said.

"If that is what people want to do and they are prepared to pay for it, I am all for it."

Crocodile scientist, Professor Grahame Webb supports the plan, saying crocodiles should be an economic asset not a liability.

"It adds to the value that crocodiles produce, and adds to the incentive to conserve them," he said.

The Territory already has an annual sustainable harvest quota of 500 adult saltwater crocodiles under an existing management program.

The amended plan is open for public comment until July 25.

The Chief Minister hopes a decision on the trial will be made by the end of the year.

The Federal Government says it will consider opposing views among Aboriginal people about the hunting of crocodiles in the Territory.

Some traditional owners says hunting would provide economic opportunities but others are opposed to the move for cultural reasons.

Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke says he will wait for the consultation process to take its course.

"It is something that will eventually come to me," he said.

"There are different views among different traditional owners on this and I really want to make sure I get the opportunity to hear those different views."

An Aboriginal group from Arnhem Land says safari hunting of crocodiles would create enormous opportunities for Indigenous people.

Gupulul Marayuwu Aboriginal Corporation director Jida Gulpilil says his community has been hunting crocs for thousands of years.

"We would be able to use the revenue out of this towards homeland development, developing scholarships for education for our young people," he said.

"The Territory already has an annual sustainable harvest quota of 500 adult saltwater crocodiles under an existing management program."

And that is something the anti hunting f&ckwits never admit or point out. About 650 crocs are taken from the wild each year already and with CITES permits.

So what is the big deal for a safari hunting harvest of 50 animals?

IMO. The reason f*ckwits like Bob Irwin and rest of his retarded inbred family come out and criticise any plans to introduce safari hunting. BECAUSE safari hunting would out compete the Irwin's business interests in getting a free harvest of wild crocs. Instead land owners would get paid substantial trophy fees for the crocs.

He is fat for sure, can't see any big holes in him, so he might not be dead Nigel, I don't think I would grab him just yet ?

Very hard to tell if reptiles are dead, I know this from experience !!

What do you say on size, 11Ft - 12Ft ?

The thickness/weight of his tail behind the rear legs is incredible. He is really fat. Must have been eating lemming's like the greenies say the wolves up here eat.

Sorry, by taken, I meant "photo taken", not shot "taken".

My mistake.

The tail was what made me think he was fat and then
his whole body looks well pumped.

Commercial exports may be permitted for specimens taken in accordance with the provisions of an approved wildlife trade management plan. Wildlife trade management plans must meet the requirements specified in section 303FO of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act) in order to be approved.

The Management Program for the Saltwater Crocodile in the Northern Territory of Australia, 2009 - 2013 was approved by the former Minister, Hon. Peter Garrett, on 29 September 2009 with the condition that safari hunting is not permitted in the Northern Territory.

The amended management plan includes safari hunting of 50 adult animals per year. This proposal has been prepared by the Northern Territory Department of Natural Resources, Environment, the Arts and Sport (NRETAS). If approved, it is proposed that the new plan with the inclusion of safari hunting will be in force until 31 December 2014.

In accordance with the provisions of section 303FR of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposed management plan that includes safari hunting. The Minister must consider public comments when deciding whether to approve a wildlife trade management plan.

Please note that the major difference between the current approved management plan and the proposed management plan is Appendix 5, which is the draft guidelines for safari hunting. Minor changes have also been made in other parts of the management plan related to safari hunting. Changes to the current approved plan are highlighted in yellow throughout the proposed plan. Please submit your written comments by 31 July 2012. Please include your full name and address in your submission.

Sarg

That "bulge" behind the head changes depending on whether they really are resting on the ground or an inch or two off the ground. And of course if they open their mouth !

Well, that's from seeing a few big one's close up in the water and on a bank.

But his tail is fat, no disputing that and he has plenty of body weight for his size. I don't think he's that long but it's hard to tell when curved like that.

Probably been feeding on Barra and Pigs !!!

While that is correct in most case's, I feel there is more fat & flesh around this guys neck than on a slim Croc, making his head seem smaller !

Here is another fat guy see the "Bulge" even when only hand held & most of his weight supported by the water .

Not my photo by the way !
