I suggest you join the SCI and attend the annual convention in Reno. There are plenty of double manufactures represented. You can look at hundreds of them and get measured up for one. Once I had been fitted for one and understood the mechanics, my opinions were changed. Reading about them is not the same.

The V-C in 500 Nitro Express was my favourite. They spent the most time with me going over how a gun should fit and work with me. YMMV. I read a lot of Boddington and got much of my enthusiasm for double rifles from his writing. But having met him, what works for him will not work for me. He is left handed,I am not. I am 6-7 inches taller than he is. Our hands, face and builds are so very different that there is no way anything could work for both of us. He is also a merchandising machine. He cannot spill the beans until he is on his deathbed like O'Connor was when he did it. There is no doubt the guy can shoot, but he did a lot of shooting without hearing protection. He is very hard of hearing. Make sure you get muffs that will work with your gun.

I think the Merkel is a greeat choice for entry-grade doubles. The price is right and they are well built. I've never heard of a Merkel having poor regulation.

I bought an early Merkel .500NE - it is s/n 3 of their .500 series. It has had hundreds of rounds through it. I still have it and still think it was a bargain.

I selected Chapuis based on your limited choices, but I think you should consider the VC and the Merkel. If you can go 15K, then you can pick up a used Heym - which I would take over all of the above.

On what basis would you prefer a used (or any) Heym over a VC??
