The only comment was left by someone who thinks that the .416 is the minimum caliber for DG.

I have not hunted Africa and DG yet and intend to do so with a 416Rigby. Boddintons comments about the 416 calibre certainly back up what I have read previously.

Have used hte .416 Rem. on all of my hunts to Africa...and really dont see the need to use anything else..plenty fast enough for a longer shot if needed and plenty of power to dump anything that walks if you do your job of shooting correctly...

G'day Ripp,

When I was deceiding on a calibre for DG the ability of the 416's that you mention, to shoot flat enough for 300 mt shots, and plenty of power were the deceiding factors. Glad of your imput as it is based on experience not just my thoughts.

I would not hesitate to hunt DG in Africa with a 9.3x62 or an FN FAL. At the other end, I have used the .585 nyati with 750 grain bullets at 2250 fps on elephant and buffalo. It is fun to give them a big whack, but not necessary, and nothing shoulder-fired will drop them immediately.

However, when lightly armed such as that, I would not provoke elephant charges. And I would take flat broadside shots only on cape buff.
