Without a book on the subject (yet) I've been musing about a project to work myself up to more ambitious stuff like making up barrels for shotgun actions.
I have in mind the task of rechambering a double rifle for a more "charismatic" chambering of the same bore size.
Are there specific problems I need to be looking out for here? I intend to take a "self regulating" model and converting it to fixed regulation, otherwise a straight rechamber and experiment exercise.
Any thoughts? 30-06 to 30 Super Flanged is the intended task at the moment.

All I can tell you is that the hotter you go with the new conversion caliber, the harder it is to get it regulated. Large heavy bullet calibers are the easiest to regulate. By "self regulating" I guess you mean a rifle that you can change the regulation on by making adjustments on it yourself using some sort of adjustment apperatus. Is that what you are talking about? If so, you will have your work cut out for you. Have you ever regulated a double rifle from beginning to end of the process? Bob

A reply to me or ExcessExpress?
Re "hotter you go" - isn't this going lower pressure? Certainly similar.

For the two questions, yes and yes.
ie in a self-regulating set of barrels with movable wedges.
One of our Aussie members also once commented that he re-regulated three sets of barrels and re-soldered them and really didn't think it was that difficult. Time consuming and costly by a gunmaker though it might be. What he did is beyond me though.

The .30/06 is a 60,000PSI SAAMI and 59,00psi CIP round.
The .30 Fl. Purdey is listed as 46,000PSI CIP as is the .30 FL. Magnum.

From 3006 to something flanged I would consider 300 H&H flanged or 30R Blaser.

I recently read a post somewhere about converting one of those 30'06 Baikal doubles to a flanged cartridge. The man used 7X65R brass and reformed it to match the 30'06 dimensions and just had to change the extractor for the rimmed case. So, what he ended up with was a 30'06 rimmed loaded to the same specs as the regular cartridge so no further regulation was required and he could reload using the regular dies. Really a pretty neat project. No "charisma" in that though...

That was a good move. Could also use a necked down 9.3x74, couldn't you?

Hmmm, I was thinking of reaming out a Bakial 45-70 to 45-120, just for the looks of the bigger cases????
