      #210361 - 07/06/12 08:42 PM

If anyones got any they can post please do so, am interested in reading them.
The good and the bad. Will also get round to scanning one that was in "Dangerous Game Hunting" Volume 3, issue 2. (Anyone know how often this comes out, ive only seen it once in the local newsagents.

Heres one to get started.

There is a snippet here:

http://forums.nitroexpress.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=78060&an=0&page=2

Quote:

A 700 Nitro Express was taken on a recent elephant hunt in Botswana with Safaris Botswana Bound ( saf.bots@info.bw ), and the following report was provided by Graeme Pollock.

Quote:

"The gun was too heavy for the hunter to walk the long distances sometimes required in Elephant hunting…. The first shot on the Elephant was a frontal shot which did not hit the brain and did not knock the Elephant down. The shot was apparently high due to a hang fire. The second shot was lung heart and the elephant again did not go straight down but it did not move much either before going down. The 1000g bullet seems to have not much more noticeable knockdown power than the 500 or 470 NE 500g round."

He wrote some pages about the .700 NE and he had use them some years...

In person, Mr. Sullivan told me that the .700 is too heavy and slow, and he strongly prefers a .600 because it is more maneuverable. I suppose there is a big difference in how quickly one can shoulder a 13 pound rifle compared to a 20 pound rifle.

Hello everyone!
Thanks for the responses.

Poprivit: indeed that is the article! Despite the bleeding arm, how did you find it? How heavy was that gun, how'd it compare to other calibers? What we're the sights on that rifle? It others you've seen? (like, standing/ folding and what yardages?). Any stories from anyone you know who have used them on game?

500grains: what else did he have to say about it (any stories?)

DrFM: thanks for that, I'll look into ordering it

So far the general consensus from all I've heard/read is that they're too heavy.

But as a "fun gun"... I wouldn't mind copying Ed Hubel and building a savage 210 bolt action shotgun into one. Weight around 17lbs or something.

Cheers guys,
Ash

Lift gun through target. As it drops down past target, shoot. Waaay too much gun for the elephant and cape buffalos I've taken.

I've used the .577 also, same story. All the 700 proves is that you have too much money, too much free time and not enough self esteem. Other than penis envy, I can't see a use for the gun.

Butch Searcy built the one I shot with one standing and two folding rear sights. The 700 would not be very useful past 25-35 yards, as a rest would be needed and all that lovely recoil would come back to bite. Three shots a week were much more than enough for me. A friend of mine who shall remain nameless, said the 700 didn't do much more than a good 450-470 could do.

Were I to convert the Savage shotgun to a .700, I'd make sure I had someone dumber than me to shoot it. Not so much recoil, but the idea of many small gun parts flying in loose formation doesn't interest me.

He was looking for a buyer for his at the time. It cost something outrageous - 150K or 250K or something like that.

I HAVE CONCLUDED THAT THE 600 IS THE PEAK OF MY RECOIL TOLERANCE I SHOOT IT IN A T SHIRT NO PAD BUT I DONT KNOW IF I WANNA GO HIGHER WHEN THAT 160 GRAINS OF POWDER IGNITES IT CAUSES REACTIONS

I hear ya Sir!
The largest "sporting rifle" I've shot is my Ruger No.1 S.S. .458 Lott. I can shoot aroud 8-10 rnds off the bench with just a T shirt then the headaches start and my accuracy falls off!

I've shot numerous .50 BMG's but as you know their so heavy its just not the same as a sporting rifle of normal weight.

I would love some day to shoot someones .600 NE but I know of nooone in my general location of S.W. PA who owns one.

Thanks for adding to this topic Sir!!
Take care,
Chris
