Ann & Christer-thanks for the kind words. This Waterbuck has an interesting story behind it. I was hunting in Namibia with Jan Oelofse Safaris, PH Steve Tors, and we had seen this Waterbuck leaving a waterhole the previous 3 days, always around 11:00 AM, but couldn't get in the right position for a shot. The 4th day we were set up properly, but just as I got ready to shoot from about 50 yards or so, he took a step forward, and completely covered his chest with an intervening tree trunk. He just knew something wasn't right. Every time I would shift my position and raise my 375 Ackley to shoot, he would take another step keeping the tree between us. This went on for perhaps 10 minutes. Finally, he broke out on a dead run, giving me a broadside shot. I fired just as he hit a good sized opening, but unfortunately, I missed him, having led him by about a foot, rather than hold on him because of the short distance. I knew I missed as soon as I fired. I told Steve I missed cleanly, but then instead of clearing out of the area, the Waterbuck only ran another 40 or 50 yards, and tucked himself inside a thorn bush. Steve said this behavior was very unusual and voiced his opinion that perhaps I had wounded it, because there was no reason for it to stop fleeing. Since Steve felt that it was probably wounded, I felt it best to put another shot into it while I had a chance. The only open area offered for a shot was a 5 or 6 inch patch of the neck, so I got into a sitting position and squeezed one off. The Waterbuck went down immediately, with a broken neck. Just like my Nyala, he was just shy of 30 inches. Oh, by the way, an examination of the carcass showed that I had indeed missed with my first shot. I guess he just wanted to die. As I've said before, I'd rather be lucky than good. This time I was just plain lucky!

Mike,

When are you coming over again for a hunt in Africa ? Fancy a hunt in the Klaserie with very good rates as well as hunting between the big five ?
I would love to take out a lucky hunter like you any day
