Meindl Boots - which model and where to buy?
      #210191 - 06/06/12 12:57 AM

Looking for recommendations for Meindl boots.

I was told the Makalu boots are too tough and designed for high alpine hunting with crampons.

Was recommended towards the Island Pro or Island MFS model.

These boots are for hunting in cold and mountainous environments in NZ, Australia etc plus also in Europe such as Norway and Sweden.

I need better boots. The cheap ones I have been using are tight and leak. Were OK for hot country hunting though. My good Scarpas no longer fit.

Second question:

Where to buy?

USA - who stocks them and sells online?

Europe?

I know where to get them in Australia but OS usually 40 to 60% of the price.

PS I have done a search for EU stockists and found some but looking for recommendations.

In the USA Cabelas does not stock the Island model.

I have had 4 pairs of Meindl boots, and will never buy them again. I have now settled on a Norwegian brand called Alfa bever, and could not be more satisfied. The first three pairs of Meindl boots I had the inner lining in the boots came loose. The fourth pair are now just for backup. I also feel these boots are way to stiff to be comfortable. Another recommendation would be the Harkila Pro-hunter boot.

John

I have recently bought a pair of Meindl Island MFS boots and find them quite heavy and stiff, and I don't think they will get much more flexible with long term use. As I live in Queensland they are a winter only boot, will be far too hot for summer. Also the soles are quite thick, so much so that I can't ride a motorbike or quad with them on as it is near impossible to get the toe under the gear lever without standing up, taking the foot off the pegs and reaching down to change gears. The weight is quite tiring unless you are in good nick, and I am not.

Probably wouldn't buy another pair, good old army GP boots are all I probably need.

Eagle

Interesting you mention weight and army gp boots.

I found once I got a pair of Lighter weight boots,
then my legs didn't get nearly as tired. That put
paid to any large boots I had.

Current ADF boots are pretty good. The first of the tan model used roo hide and mine are still going since 95 though way overdue for a resole. Current models are in hot and cold(ish) climate models and feature a combination of Nubuck and goretex/ mesh. Very good bang for the buck and available in fractional widths for those of us who wear thongs (flip flops for the o/s mob)

John, I have the Makalu and find them excellent for the Kiwi high country in winter. They are heavy and stiff. However if you are going to do a lot of sidling and climbing on steep surfaces they do come into their own.

If not then go for something lighter and with more flex in the sole. I would check out the other Meindl boots recomended to you and maybe their Sambar boot. I have not checked the Sambar out so do not know if they are what you are looking for.

I would also check out some of the others recomemded by other forum members but I am very hesitant to buy footwear I can not try on.

I have used a pair of Makalu's for over ten years now and yes they are a bit heavy for Aus conditions (ideal for mountain Chamois and Thar hunting). The Islands are ideal for hill hunting. I have quite a few friend who use these and one guy who bought a pair recently. Will find out from where.

I am on my second pair if Islands and have a pair of Makalus as well. IMO they are a great boot. Yes a bit stiff but once worn in they are good. The latest pair didn't even need weaing in. COmfortable right from the start. Got them in a wider fitting and works a treat.

Mate bought his from Hermann for around $400.
My Bro has had two pairs of Islands for about 14 years now but hasn't worn out the first. Surprising as a lot of them had a soft compound within the Vibram sole which decomposed causing de-lamination of the total sole.
The are generally a wide comfortable fit unless they are full blown mountain boots which are quite hard to "run in".

From another thread I asked a similar question some time ago.

Ozhunter commented:
Quote:

John, Try the fit of Meindl "BADILE" or "Island", Scarpa "Terra gtx, Ranger gtx or SL", Asolo "Power Matic 500", La Sportiva and Zamberland ALL with GorTex inner.

If Zamberlan boots suit your feet then the "Nebraska GT" with its Classic stitched sole weighing in at 750gr would be ideal.

Purchased a set of Scarpa Ranger GTX's. They were available in town nearby and as I prefer to try on, not buy on the internet for boots, tried various Scarpa's and found the Ranger's were wider fitting and fitted well.

Wore them the first time today on the farm, and felt good.

Used to have a set of Scarpa Trek's but they are too small now.

Did get over to Sydney on the weekend and had a look at Meindls at the Shot Show, and looked at the Island boots, but as I had already purchased the Scarpa's a couple of days earlier, no purpose in trying them on.

The Scarpas were also cheaper and available locally where the Meindls seem to be stocked by only one retailer in Australia ... per the NZ 'importer'.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Will post a photo when I take one.
