7x57 and a Few Boars
      #209176 - 27/05/12 06:10 PM

Went for a hunt after some buff and boars. The buff were too far out in the thick stuff and deep water feeding on hymenacni. So we got amongst the pigs . took several nice boars with the 7x57 and i like how it performs. Took seven out of one mob.
Also shot a boar with a 400 hydro out of the 458, overkill but a lot of fun. Heres some pics. Mick
winchester super express 458/ 400 hydro
510 weldcore, 400 hydro
7x57 145 factory winchester/ featherweight
boars were fighting . 7x57
Bec and here second boar, 243CDL
Chris 243 CDL
Mustering with chopper
Winchester M70, 7x57, 338, 458.

A decent day out Mick that many others on here would give a nut for.

Ozhunter, the hydros feed in my 458 fine. Even a slow push has them going in smooth. Did some fast shooting on a mob of pigs and no hang ups at all. Im going to change to the hydros as my all round load. Mick

Some good boars there and nice Winchesters.

I looked up "Hymenachne" - http://www.weeds.org.au/cgi-bin/weedident.cgi?tpl=plant.tpl&ibra=all&card=G09

My first question was on 458 hydro feeding too, great to see they run nicely in the action.

Is that your little chopper?

Cheers

.243's can be effective - no doubt about that. I know someone who has shot 3 grizzlies that were in the act of killing calves. He used a .243 with factory 100gr. SP's.

Not my choice.

It's obvious it works on your hogs, Mick - probably works well on them, too.

tinker - no the chopper is a contractors. He comes in for the mustering of stock. Large properties and some very in accessable areas. Water is still very high on the floodplain on this property.
Daryl S- 243 works well with well placed shots, Ive shot more pigs with 243's than any other calibre. used a rem 700 for the chiller trade/ Box with 85 sierras. Only head shots accepted. Mostly shot from quads or utes. Spotlighting or late evening shooting. Was good money when over $1.00 a kg. Still hard work.
For hunting I run 85 barnes , nosler partitions and 95 partitions, in a styer and rem 700. My daughters learnt to hunt shoot with the 243's.
Edited above as I was using 400 hydros and not 450 grain, 458. Alot nicer to shoot than the 500 loads. Cheers Mick

Good pics and write up. Great to see your daughter enjoys hunting.

Some good pigs there Mick.
You sure do live in a great part of the country for hunting.

Thanks for sharing mate.

Good to be out and about.

Those Hydro's are the bomb imo.
Did you see my "Hydro's and hogs" post with the Hydro's.
Cant believe the damage they do for a solid.

fatboy, liked your post on the hydros. i had just started using them in my 338. when the barnes run out Ill be staying with the hydros. Still trying to recover one. trying to source some 140 7mm hydros to try in the 7x57, on bigger stuff.
Still pretty wet up here, but good to get out. Looking forward to the dry season. Cheers Mick
