I have been looking here awhile at all the beautiful rifle pictures posted and thought I would join in. Here are some pictures of a rifle I've owned and enjoyed for about 20yrs. It is in 7.92x57 caliber and very accurate. I have some questions about it but I'll post the pictures first and ask the questions in a follow up post.

Thanks For Looking I hope you enjoy.

Well, it looks like I didn't do something right when I added photos. Maybe someone can tell me how to straighten them out. Thanks!

nice mauser, something I would like to have because of the Teschner Collath provenance.
in fact this rifle was made for Teschner Collath in Suhl/ Zella Mehlis. without a name hidden somewhere more or less impossible to say who make it. the octagonal to round barrels are the best looking barrels ever made.
nothing comes close to this design!
take a look on the engravings of my M 88 sporter probably made by Haenel or Schilling. you see it the same school:

Yep, those octagon to round barrels are certainly attractive.

Mark,

What is the length of your barrel?

Lancaster, Very nice M88 sporter you have there! I can see the the engraving does look very much like that on my rifle. Do you think that my rifle was made for Collath and not by him? I wasn't sure if he made all the guns with his name on them or if he farmed some of the work out. I don't know if you looked at all my pictures, they spread out sideways so you have to scroll over. There is a photo of the bottom of the barrel. I have a few more photos that I didn't post. I agree with you and Buchseman that the octagon to round barrels are the best looking barrels out there. I've always like the M88 sporters also, again yours is very nice. Thanks

Can I edit my post so all the photos can be seen without scrolling sideways, I'm not sure what I did wrong when I posted them. Sorry for the mess!

Collath sold all kind of guns including such things like Mannlicher Schönauer or the FN 1900(same as Remington Model 8)were it is obviously. I think they concentrate on making break action guns and rifles. all other things were traded and this was a very common practise.

Mark,

I am not sure how to go back and edit your original post but I doubt anyone would mind if you replied and added them again. I suspect you listed the links to each picture in series rather than starting a new line for each. The way they are is fine with me but if you would prefer to reorganize them try listing them as such:

Link

Link

etc.

Regards,

Buchseman

I'm going to try and repost my photos as Buchseman suggested.
I have a question about the proof on the side of the receiver.
You can see in the photo that the rifle was originally proofed
at 2.67 gG.B.P. but later reproofed at 2.45 gG.B.P. When I bought
this rifle it had a set of claw mounts on it that I removed.
The front mount is about 2" wide and made the rifle uncomfortable
to carry. The scope mounts were added sometime after the rifle
was built. Did it have to be reproofed since the mount was dovetailed
into the receiver ring? There are no numbers on the bottom flat of
the receiver behind the recoil lug of on the back of the magazine
box as I've read elswhere that an Oberndorf Mauser commercial
action should have. I'm dating the action by the type of firing pin
it has to 1905 or earlier. Military action probably wouldn't have
been avaliable that early and Mauser patents were still valid. So,
what do I have, I was told on another forum that it wasn't a
commercial Mauser action.

Thanks Buchseman it worked. I was also curious about the script M on the bottom of the cocking piece, the RS inside an oval and E3B in script on the bottom of the barrel. Thanks so much for all the replies.
