Yes - that gun belongs in a punt. I would not advise shooting it in the manner shown for the picture.

The 1 1/2" bore (right around 1 gauge I think) needs to be mounted on a recoil absorbing rubber'd pintle to the gunnels for recoil absorbsion.
Seems to me, the 1 1/2" shot something like 3 pounds of shot with around 1,000gr. of powder - or perhaps more powder than that. I recall reading the record kill was 122 ducks and geese with one shot using 3 pounds of #1 shot - at a range of around 100yards to the centre of the flock. The shot was aimed some 4 feet above the birds so they'd take off into the shot cloud as the smoke cloud spooked them but was probably to allow for the rise and drop of the drop too. Pellets hitting the water only 40yards out would be wasted shot, helse the elevation given.

Fascinating guns.

Murray Mitchell's book "Brother to the Dingo" details some of his experience waterfowling with punts and punt guns in the UK.

Do a search on "Brother to the Dingo" if interested. Some comments on NE. He may still have some copies of his book if anyone is interested. If so, please PM me.

Some punt guns still in use here in the UK, though unfortunately I am not one of the users. Colonel Peter Hawker tells tales of puntgunning in the early 1800s around the Isle of Wight. See also Sir Ralph Payne-Gallwey - The Fowler in Ireland published in 1882 - for much more. reprint by Ashford Press in 1985

In the 1950s actor James Robertson Justice was a great enthusiast and legend has it that on one trip when he was accompanied by Prince Philip - husband of our queen, the pair came close to drowning.

Here in the States, they were outlawed in the mid 1800's. There are many stories of hearing booms in the early hours from the Chesapeake Bay until the 1940's. Hidden guns and boats survived for almost a hundred years Talk about a market hunting gun!!!

I see complete units of boat and gun in some of the UK auctions, beautiful. I haves smiled over the Holland and Holland punt in their Manhattan showroom. Also there is a double 4 bore rifle. Nice combo.....

there is some stuff about punt guns on youtube

I had once a collections of punt gun pics. a lot of different guns but loose it in a computer crash.

punt guns and svivel guns(same kind of big shotguns but used on a pivot in duck hunting blinds) were used also in continental europe. I know it about france, switzerland and italy till know.
in french they are called Canardieres and the bore of the french guns have seen is given as 37mm so I believe its the old 1,5" eley punt gun cartridge. beside with the french italien 34mm punt gun cartridge the only factory made ammo for this kind of guns. the eley 1,5" case is the same as the 37mm flare gun case. the italien 34mm case was used also in switzerland for a 34 mm signal flare pistol.
this is a 37mm punt gun made in saint etienne and used with 5mm shot on the lake neuchatel in switzerland up to 1962 when this kind of hunting was forbidden there.

check out puntgunner.co.uk. I think there is also video somewhere on the web of Tom Knapp test firing a punt gun, with interesting results, at least as long as you are behind the breech!

Here are few punt guns, of an earlier period, along with some normal pelters.

I like the bicycle brake-lever as trigger actuator on Lancaster's photo.

Friggin huge guns though. Would be great fun here on the hill!

Punt gunning was done a lot on the Wash in Norfolk, UK.

My father met some interesting old school people who still did it in the 40's and 50's - and maybe later, not sure.

yes it is, a modification made from the last owner. the interesting thing with this model is the spring recoil buffer on top and the free floating barrel itself. something you also find on british made punt guns.

I think the punt guns used in Mitchell's book were all muzzle loaders too.

this punt gun with a snider action belongs to a friend

gun started as muzzle loader and was converted by John Padstone Southampton. its coming from ireland some years ago.
I was making cases for this with once fired 23x152 Belted Russian machine gun steel cases.
The chamber of the punt gun shows an unknown cartridge :
40mm rim
36mm base
33mm mouth
155mm length

the 23x152 B:
35mm belt
32mm neck
length till beginning of the neck 120mm

I turn the base of the steel case so it accept a 40mm steel washer and welding it together.
Drill a hole for a 209 shotgun primer into the case and anealed the neck.

The old Williamstown Rifle Range in Melbourne Vic had some punt guns and a couple of Wall guns from the Great Wall of China in the Bar. The first photo with the 2 blokes holding it look similar to the Wall Guns. Literaly killed at both ends.

I collect punt guns and large bore shotguns, many are on the front page of our site. This is a shot of me holding a 2 Gauge gun, it's 8ft long and has an English lock and barrel, but was stocked and used here in America. It also appears to have been painted white at one time for night hunting.
