Method of cleaning an elephant skull wanted
      #208184 - 09/05/12 12:12 PM

Having boiled up plenty of deer and other animal skulls I was thinking how in the hell does a taxidermist clean up such a huge head.Do they boil them out or what other is the method employed.

Hi Gryphon,

I am not sure of the correct name but they are a beetle... suggest you ask a local taxidermist their name...

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

I knew of the beetle method but thought to myself " surely the pro`s have a far quicker method than the insects"

Also when boiling up a skull with a little washing detergent thrown into the water the fat content is reduced to virtually nil and the beetles only remove the edibles.
None boiling leaves a 'raw' bone, maybe its chem treated?
I thought that perhaps they either broke the skull down or used a giant vat?????

When I hunted elephant in the Caprivi they buried my bulls head in the sand and three days later the tusks pulled free without chopping. They told me the entire skull would be clean when they uncovered it but I failed to ask how long that would take. The head was skinned before burying it.
