I have put in a few hours on my Brno stock.
Coming along nicely.

G'Day Fella's,

Daryl, the 6.5 x 47 Lap case is similar to a .250 Savage case (necked up) but far more robust, to cope with the higher pressures!

Doh!

.250Sav. or .22/250 - 1.914" - same case - I would use the .22/250 case necked up - thinner necks perhaps? - you guys are aware, I suspect, that even though it has a LOT of taper, the standard .22/250 case is a 65,000 SAAMI PSI cartridge.

Small rifle primer pockets came out for match shooting in the .308 basic case for shortening or necking forthe BR rounds, some time ago. It is only logical they would use them in the 6.5x47.

I made up some of my .22BR brass with small rifle pockets and others with standard pockets. It was a match rifle, not a BR rifle. I could not shoot the difference, but then, I was happy with 3/8" for 10 shot, 100 meter groups with metalic sights. As to better handling pressure - I don't think so as the primer is the weak link and large rifle primers have heavier cups. Loads that gave small rifle primer problems in my BR, were duplicated for speed with large primers without any signs of excessive pressure.

It could be they are used mainly for more even pressure curves or consistancy. This is usually a big deal in smaller capacity rounds.

I do know that the small pocket .243's blown out and necked to 22's (Clark, etc), have ignition problems and big SD's in cool weather.

That slightly smaller 6.5 is probably a wonderful round - don't get me wrong - I'd just prefer a bit more speed is all. A 6.5x57Ack. IMP will duplicate the 6.5x.284 and would be more inline with my choice for a 1,000 yard rifle, whereas the 6.5x47 would probably win me out for a 600yard postition rifle.

I think you could be right. Apparently when the round was being tested it originally had a large primer, but the US match and benchrest testers persuaded Lapua to use the small primer... Hearsay on my part though.

As for the ignition in cold weather, I have heard similar but not see any actual test data in the 6.5x47. CCI 450s seem to be a popular choice, so maybe that is the reason?

As I understand primers, the Remington 7 1/2 primer came out to better handle the slightly higher pressures generated by the .17 Rem, over the .222 and .222 Mag. You can also included the current .223 and .204's in that list of higher pressure small primer cartridges.

The Rem. 7 1/2 has the strongest & thickest cup, with the CCI450 magnum primer having the second thickest & strongest, I'm advised. Thick doesn't always mean strongest as the temper of the metal also comes into play. I've had less cratering with Fed primers than with CCI 400's and Win.SR pimers. I have stopped using the WW and CCI 400's due to their being of less cup strength, in my .17AH. I'm now using either 7 1/2 Match or Fed 205 Match primers. The 6 1/2 Rem's, I'm advised, has the thinnest and weakest of the rifle primer cups, with the weakest ingniton in that class of primer.

The problem with the ignition in small pocket ctgs, was due to the over 40 to 50 gr. powder charges of the necked .308 case as it was just too much volume of powder for a small rifle primer to ignite properly in cold weather. This was all before the "Extreme" powders that ADI makes for Hodgdon. Maybe they ignite more easily as well?

Suffice to say, you do NOT want pierced primers as just a single one, can cut an extra hole in your bolt face, errode the firing pin into a spear point (more pierced primers) or widen the pin hole, which promotes more cratering and piercing.

When dealing with higher pressure ctgs. and small primers - do be careful and use the primers having the strongest cups that are available.
