First hunt with 7x57
      #207650 - 25/04/12 08:43 PM

Got the PTA, yesterday, so a quick set up and a run out to the station. Sighted in at 50m and decided that that would do . Using winchester 145 factory ammo. Walked the edge of the floodplain as we had rain and water levels were up. Hoped to find something on the edge. Had done about 2km and spotted a small sow walking back into the mimosa. Raking shot from around 30m and she dropped on the spot. Recovered the projectile behind her jaw.
bumped a couple from a wallow but couldnt get a shot so headed up to the high ground and checked out some bedding spots. Bumped a good boar from one and couldnt get a shot, went to the next wallow and spotted a boar asleep. Chest shot off hand from 30 m , didnt move from his bed. Recovered projectile under the skin on the off side.
Found another sow on the walk back and shot her from around 50m , dropped on the spot.
Long walk back to the car with nothing else sighted. Plenty of time to contemplate the performance of the 7x57. Pretty impressed so far cant wait to load for it with some decent projectiles. Very mild recoil and report, easy to shoot.
Rifle is a Winchester feather weight 80's model. 3x9 vx2 warne quick release mounts. It took me a long time to find one. Will do a proper sight in when I return from holidays.

Hi Mick,

A very successful hunt, well done and seems the Winchester done it's bit with the 7x57 is a real classic.

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

Once you've had a 7x57 nothing else will do.

The typically low factory speed seemed well matched to the bullet used, Mick. That's good performance, all round.

7x57's are fun. Over the years, I've had 4, but nothing in the stable right now - will change that. I'd like a 7mm08 just because it's a round I've never owned. I've a perfect action for one - a small ring M98 Mexican Mauser.

Your rifle looks just fine - and brand new, in the closeup.

Yes love mine, it really is a calibre you could just have if (god forbid) we were only allowed one rifle (no fun in that). Mine was originally built for Neale (Fatboy404) and as is his way with all the his latest ones he has built it is very well proportioned. It is the rifle I take with me to lend to friends when they shoot with me because of it's mild and pleasant nature and I get many comments on this fact. I think Neale wishes he had kept it now

Nice work there Mick!

They are a nice rifle, mate of mine has one the same, still trying to sell it to me as well.

I have a featherweight in 3006, I guess I could buy the 7x57 and give it to Will to use!

Sounds like there are still plenty of pigs around up your way!

Hunt hard and enjoy the adventure.

phil, grab the featherweight for Will.
Still plenty of pigs around but grass is still very high. Did 11k's for the 3. Saw 9 all up, but most were into the thick stuff pretty quick. Probably could have got more, but doing a fair amount of work with Mak, the weimeraner. He is coming along well. Cheers Mick
