Rifle's age vs. Shooter's age?
      #20698 - 09/11/04 03:00 PM

something in that thread about that Fuchs abomination got me thinking....

my rifle is 60 years older than I am (1918 vs. 1978)... and I wonder how many other people can say that their gun is THAT MUCH older...

just a thought.

and I'm really bored waiting for deer season to open on saturday!!!!

Oh, Shit! I'm older than all my firearms. Born in '48. I guess I like nice young things.

My oldest double rifle is a 20-bore/.577 Alexander Henry, described in the maker's ledger as a “Best Quality” double barrel express finished on the 6th of November 1882. It weighed 11 1/4 pounds when it left Edinburgh and was regulated for a load of 6 3/4 drams using what the books call “solid bottle case”.

If I was your age, Das Mafia, it would have just 4 years short of a century on me!

I should clarify... the ACTION is a 1918... the gun itself has surely seen several iterations.

It is a 1918 oberndorf Mauser 98K. I do not know if it was an 8mm or 7mm originally, but i suspect an 8mm. it is now a 35 Whelen and it doesn't feed very well, and that troubles me.

I bought it from Jim Dodd last winter, love the gun, love the round... really not pleased with the feeding... my dad's 30-06 Mauser feeds like butter... its not even funny they are so different. I don't think its the length of the cartridge either at 3.32" its well below max-spec.

still going to kill bambi with it though!

those are all impressive lists... but this is only the second gun I've bought, so I figure I have a lot of time to work things out!

Nothing unusual - I shoot and collect Martini's, but I also have a Snider .577. I was born in '65, and the Snider is a
Mk II** - Late 1860's, early 1870's? That makes about 100 years... Most Martini's I have date bach to the 1880's. And yes, they get shot.

It is a good thing with the shooting/ guns game ,that rifles arent throw away items when they are a few years old. Cars and bikes are usualy scrapped when 5 years old or so. Jeeze ,when I was racing motocross , the bike was out dated if it was 2 years old. When I was younger ,all my guns were brand new ,latest and greatest. 20 years on ,my last few guns are all at least 60 years older than me. I hope to still have some of them in another 60 years.

Age of shooter: Born 1954 - 50 years.

Purdey .500 BPE made in 1894 - age of rifle: 110 years.
Age difference: 60 years.

J. Woodward & Sons .450/.400 3.25" Nitro Express made in 1891 - age of rifle: 113 years.
Age difference 63 years.

Thomas Horsley & Sons 12 bore double rifle circa 1875 - age of rifle 129 years.

Some things improve with age (maybe not men, though)!

Cheers,

Snider-Enfield MkIII sporter 1871
Martini-Henry MkIV rifle 1886
Stevens sxs 12 bore 1916
