I don't know about the rest of you but on more than one occaision while shooting on the range I have noticed a bug crawling on the target. And like most shooters I have taken a shot at that bug. You never can tell if you hit the bug or not as it is always just gone.
Yesterday I was working with a Martini 1215 that I had lined and chambered to Hornady's new 17 Mach 2 rimfire.
A Black Wasp landed on the target and started crawling around. Who's going to dispute that Wasps aren't dangerous game. For may own personal safety and those of my fellow shooters on the range I had to shoot to protect us all.
I was able to stop him with one shot.
Pennsylvania black wasp 17M2 17 gr Vmax 25 yards M8-4x Leupold BSA M12/15 Martini relined with Redman liner
I felt confident taking the shot, the gun shoots pretty good.

When I saw the calibre in your post title, DD, I nearly didn't read it! Glad I did! Marvellous, and good shooting too!

Great shot! It's a shame that the taxidermist is going to have to recreate your trophy in fiberglass since there's nothing left of the original.

please think about what you are doing next time. Maybe you only wound the wasp and the dangerous game attack you and the other. this martiny is not a double rifle, thank god for the good shot this time.

One thing I forgot to comment on is that load seems to provide excellent penetration. I wouldn't be at all afraid to use it on the giant green headed flys we have around here.

Is this the same calibre as the .17 Hornady Magnum, the rimfire or a new rimfire .17?
Deadly accuracy, I can imagine you will pick off the tetse flies off that old DugaBoy quite well. Probably make good and close friends with him that way.

Nitro,
see:
The new Hornady 17 Mach 2 http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=51 and http://www.rifleshootermag.com/ammunition/mach2_062904/
It's based on the 22 Long Rifle case.

Has anyone out there shot any furred game with this round? I have a friend that I watched shoot a coyote a while back with one. Coyote looked at us and ran off as if nothing untoward had occured. He did not bleed much that we could see. We thaen caught him at about 300 yds and hit him with a 6mm so we could do an autopsy. We found that the little bullet had not penetrated into any vital organs and pretty much blew up on his shoulder. This is the only thing I have seen the little .17 used on but from this experience I don't think I will be getting one anytime soon. Any experiences out there with this round?

Taos if you shot a coyote a while back with a 17 Rimfire it was probably the 17 HMR, a 22 mag rimfire necked down to 17.
The cartridge I am using is the 17 Hornady Mach 2. It was only released in August. It is basically a .22 Stinger necked down to 17 cal.
The bullet in both rounds is a 17 gr V-Max bullet and it is intended to rapidly expand and disintegrate. They are not coyote rounds in either form.
If you look closely at the wasp target you can see signs of bullet disintegration.
Beside the Wasp only one grey squirrel has had the opportunity to test the little M2. There was no head left, it was gone from the shoulders up.
I intend to take a case of 17M2 ammo with me to Montana next spring. This to me seems like the perfect round for the Montana gophers!

DD,
It was the HMR. It seems that a lot of the sellers out here are advising that it is great for song dogs. It may be okay for fox and squirrels but from what I have seen nothing any bigger. It does look like it would be a fun round for squirrels. I think maybe I will get one for my son and let him wring it out a bit.

He tried to take the dogs!!! These modern kid they have no respect!
Now's the time to get him a 17M2...Shoot the bore out and then give it to him....in 10 or 12 years...
I started building a rifle for my kid when he went in the Marines, told him it would be ready when got out...that was 18 years ago. He switched to the Army so he could fly helicopters. Gun should finish in two years...when he gets out... It's important that we keep our word.
