Moly Coated cast bullets?
      #206298 - 01/04/12 08:44 AM

G'Day Fella's,

I was busy in the Funshop yesterday, applying Cerakote to a couple of synthetic rifle stocks, when I had a thought!

I had recently read on this forum, how individuals were wrapping cast bullets with Teflon tape, as a lubricant.
Well, I was wondering if and has any body applied either pressure pack spay-on Molybdenum, like "Ms-Moly" or the Cerakote made dry lubricant Micro Slick, to cast bullets???

Looking forward to your reply's and ideas

Doh!

Homer - I tried moly coating some 450gr. bullets for my .50/70 Sharps with smokeless loads. They worked just as well as lubed bullets, I thought - still shooting into around 3" at 100 meters with the carbine's 1859 battle sights. I used MS Moly.

G'day Hommer,
I have moly coated .30 cal gas check bullets and fired them at jacketed speeds, from a .303 and they seem to work well.
Accuracy was no different to the jacketed stuff and I couldn't detect more leading than the grease lubed ones.
I just tumble lubed them, same as the jacketed ones, but for a shorter time, so the edges wouldn't be too rounded.

Due to using a spray, mine were placed nose down (little holes) into a piece of harder foam. I then sprayed the bullets with MS Moly just as I've done with my .17 cal. jacketed bullets.

Afro - interesting - at jacketed speeds? Like 2,400fps to 2,500fps? What alloy?

When I ran cast at jacketed speeds, 250gr. at 2,700fps in a .375, I first hardened the cast bullets in the oven and used LBT Blue. No leading and MOA accuracy - in 1982, after buying and absorbing Veral's (LBT) book.

It would be easier just to size the bullets, harden then spray or tumble, load and shoot. With no lube, there's no lube to pick up dust or other contaminents and grease grooves can be outside the case for better match of bullet to throat. I'll have to try that some time and see what happens.

Thanks for that nugget of knowledge, Boys.

Daryl,
They were cast from #2 alloy.

tks AFRO408 - fairly stiff but softer and less brittle than Lino.

Any updates on this?
That chain lube has me pondering all sorts of spray applications such as this.

Homer - I moly coated some 450gr. bullets for my .50/70 Sharps some years ago. With MsMoly, they shot the same as the lubed bullets, no better, certainly no worse. Average groups at 100 meters were 3"- no matter what lube was used - smokeless as well as black powder loads. The BP loads ALL had BP lube to soften the fouling. I would not expect the moly to work with BPowder loads any more than an alox lubed bullet do (my tests with alox and BP have been dismal).

Luybing by spraying, was incredibly easy and fast.
