Double rifle on darne action
      #205704 - 22/03/12 04:34 AM

Just bought Mr. Brown's book on building double rifles on shotgun actions, and first I must say it is an excellent book. Very interesting read, Im currently in early planning stages of building a double (hopefully sometime soon). I was talking to a buddy of mine about different donor action types and he pointed out a type of action that I'd never heard of, I think it's a Darne (sp?) action. In doing a little research about them, at one point they did make a double rifle in 9.3x74mm i believe, but i was wondering how the actions from a 12ga or 16ga would hold up to a rifle? Im not 100% decided of calliber, i'm leaning towards a .450/400 or .450 nitro express, would these actions be able to withstand that much force?

Any info would be welcome

Erik

A few years back, I wrote to Darne, in France, asking about their double rifle, and what they thought about using a Darne shotgun action for conversion to double rifle. They told me that their double rifle was in 8 x 57R only, and that it used special high strength steel, so they couldn't recommend the use of one of their shotgun actions for conversion to double rifle, because they use a lower strength steel. However, after studying the actions, I am not thoroughly convinced that their shotgun actions would not hold up to cartridges of low to mild pressures, and that is exactly why I am now in the process of converting a Darne 12 gauge (for added strength due to beefier action size, compared to 16 or smaller gauge), to 8 x 57R. By the way, a French made Charlin shotgun action, somewhat similar to a Darne, but much heavier and stronger, is more suitable for conversion work. Also, I am in the process of conversions using various other actions, most of them being German, but a few others. I took class on this conversion process, from W. Ellis Brown, at Pine Tech gunsmithing school, in MN, prior to his writing book on same subject, and I have since done many of these conversions, all successfully. His process works well, if done well.

No, because of aforementioned and other reasons, I would NOT use any Darne action for conversion to .450/.400 or .450 N.E. Use a more suitable action for conversion, German preferably, explained in Brown's book that you have. For those calibers, use only a 12 gauge; never use a 16 gauge, as they are simply too small and too light in weight for calibers you are thinking about.

It seems that nowaday they make new double rifles up to .375 H&H.

The darne action looks strong enough. A Darne double would be unique. The problem is finding an action. I bid on one on gunbroker.com but did not get it because the bids started going crazy.

The current Darne rifle actions appear to have rising-bite doll's head fasteners.
Interesting.

It is extremely good looking. I'll reserve an opinion until I learn how it locks.

thanks for the link

they do seem to be making a .375h&h these days. I think tinker is right the new ones seem to be dolls head fasteners. On the older shotguns like the r12 or r13s that ive been looking at have what Darne calls a barrel bolt. Any idea of how strong these lockup compared to something with a greener crossbolt?

Looking at their express rifles shown on the link some of their rifles have this barrel bolt, I dont know if the dollshead is specific to a certain model or what. I can read a good but of french and it doesnt seem that they specify which models have which.

apr1775: There a quite a few listed on gunsinternational at the moment. Honestly though buying a darne shotgun for $2000 and then to still build thebloc system is not really that ideal at this time, but if i was going to do it the only reason would be just to have one. It seems 12-bore is less common than smaller bores

In looking at pictures on the Darne link, and in looking over catalogs, etc. that Darne mailed me years ago, and based upon my studying of the Darne's I have owned, this is my assessment:

Look at the pictures, Darne link, of the carbine express pictures (they can be enlarged tremendously, for close viewing). They show the Doll's head, for 39R Blaser, 7x65R, 9.3x74R, double rifle, and a combination gun too. The action itself slides forward onto the barrel doll's head & locking bolts in action frame grasp this doll's head on both sides, sliding into the doll's head recesses on each side, making for a much stronger connection than is possible with their earlier barrel bolt as used on the milder 8x57R. Clearly, they developed this doll's head for the heavier calibers, and for the calibers that produce more intensity breech pressures.

Scroll on down this same picture page of carbine express Darne site, and you will also see good picture of the earlier barrel bolt system on their 8x57R. It is same system used on their shotguns, or at least on the ones I have examined through the years. As action slides forward onto barrels, a round barrel bolt slides into mating hole in action frame, and is locked in place AT ITS BASE ONLY, by a side sliding round cross bolt. My opinion is that this "barrel bolt" system in no way would be as strong as the common Greener crossbolt that we are so familiar with, OR AS STRONG AS THE LATER DESIGNED DARNE DOLL'S HEAD BOLTING SYSTEM, and explains exactly why they designed their doll's head bolting system.
