Silver solder

Just wondering what everyone is using for sweating parts together. Hi-force is a pain to get here in Canada and the hardware store varieties don't seem to cut it. Got ahold of an old roll of Magna 88C that works great but it will soon be gone. Any advice is good advice so please post your comments.

Hi Smoke 73,
You could try an electronics supply shop. They may have 4% Silver solder.
I can buy that here from Dick Smiths and they also have 99% Tin, lead free solder, in small flux cored rolls for the home electronics builders.

Try the welding outlets as well. Commweld here, has 200g rolls of 6% Silver 94% Tin un-fluxed and I use that for soldering island sight bases on. The 4% is strong enough for the banded type.

That 6% silver 94 % tin sounds like it is very close to the Hi Force that I use. I should be only using it to put the spacers and barrels together and then soft soldering everything else, but the stuff works so well, I just use it for about everything. I tin everything first then just sweat them together. I have also used 60/40 resin core to do ribs, it came from a computer store. It is made for doing electrical connections. It flows very well. Yes, that 6% Silver solder is nice to use alright.
The reason that Hi Force may be hard to get, is that it contains Cadmium ?? Highly poisonous fumes.
I wont use anything like that with cadmium in it now. It used to be in Silver Brazing rods once as well, but no more.

There are two Hi Force 44 solders, the regular is 4% silver and 96% Tin and melts at 475 degrees F., the Hi Force Hi Temp is 95 % Cadmium and 5 % silver and melts at 650 degrees F. It does give off gases and if I have to use it at all, I use it outside or with the windows and door open in the shop with a fan blowing. It says right in the instructions that you need to use plenty of ventilation with it. Bob

Plumbers use a 96/4 or 95/5 solder sometimes, could be worth checking out. Just make sure its silver and not antimony.
