Boots - what waterproofing do you use?
      #205487 - 19/03/12 12:13 PM

Hi guys,

I have just bought an expensive pair of Meindl leather hunting boots & need to give them the treatment before I hit the cold wet bush next month.

What do you use for waterproofing / treating the leather?

I have used "snoseal" on last pair of boots, but after only a couple of days the leather is quite sodden. I also tried mutton fat/beeswax mix, no better.

I use NIKWAX which is almost the same as MEINDL's own type (snowseal is also good but requires unnatural heat to apply). You must get use to the boots getting sodden quickly in NZ but the wax will protect the leather and gortex will reduce weight and time to dry compared to leather insides. Do not use fat or oil as this is what is taken out to produce good leather and fat will cause rot. Bees wax is best.

Only thing that has worked for me is "Dubbin" - it's a grease applied to a heated boot (wood stove in camp works just fine) apply until no more will absorb. With a good boot, will keep your submerged feet dry for almost 8 hours of work with a lot of submersion. Snowseal didn't work for me for more than about 2 hours.

The boots lasted for 4 years after this abuse - long enough to afford another pair.

Nowadays, I wear a rubber botton, leather top - North Face boot - comfortable and 100% water proof - dubbin on the leather still works well and I've been wearing these boots for 10 years now - normal hunting and not submerged like when running seismic lines srtraight through the bush.

With Meindl's you won't need 'waterproofing' treatment as they are a Goretex boot - you just need a leather dressing to keep it supple. I wear Meindl Makalu's in the hills and reccommend Meindl's own Sportswax.

In my opinion a good pair of gore tex lined hunting shoes doesn`t need any extra water proofing at all.

NIKIWAX is the stuff I use. When premium boots are brand new they probably don't need anything. But wrinkles and scuffs take their toll on the leather. NIKIWAX is highly recommended. SNOW SEAL is good stuff as well.

Take out the laces and the insoles and stick them in the oven at 150 degrees F or 65 degrees C until they are warm. Take one boot out at a time and apply the waterproofing. The warm leather (not hot!) will be dehydrated and will suck up the waterproofing much better. Keep doing this until the leather is saturated. This makes any and all waterproofing formulas perform much better.
