The Firearms of the African Explorer Henry Morton Stanley

.500 Revolver by E.M. Reilley, London circa 1870.

Carried by Stanley on all his expeditions and most famously on the Livingstone expedition in 1871. On the discovery and mapping of the Congo (travelling downstream from East to West) expedition Stanley's party fought natives in 34 battles in 120 days. This revolver would have fired thousands of rounds "in anger".

Complete with old label stating "The Property of the late Sir H. M. Stanley".

.44 Rimfire Calibre Model 1866 Winchester manufactured January 1871.

Given to Stanley by Edward Morris the American Ambassador to Constantinople and carried by Stanley on the expedition to find Livingstone and probably on later expeditions.

Stanley also left a similar rifle with Dr. Livingstone when he left him to return back to Britain and America.

The rifle has 3/4 length magazine and "musket style" 3/4 length forend to stock.

.45 - 75 Model 1876 Winchester Rifle by Watson Bros. c 1878.

Carried by H. M Stanley on the Congo Free State venture when he set up the administration in the Congo for the King of the Belgians.

Full length magazine, receiver with dust cover.

The mauve hides of partially submerged hippopotamuses poked above the surface of the Kingani River like bulbous stepping stones. Stanley, fancying himself a big game hunter in the manner of his rival Kirk, fired on them with his shotgun. The metal pellets only irritated the hippos. Some moved away. Most ignored him. One angry male, however, bellowed at Stanley. The journalist switched to the more powerful Winchester, a forty-four caliber Henry Model with a twenty-seven inch barrel, and shot the hippo dead.

From 'Into Africa The Epic Adventures of Standley and Livingstone' by Martin Dugard.

Here's a couple of pics of Stanley's big game rifle (or one of them), a Continental rolling-block single-barrel by Paula, Dutch perhaps? Can't remember the chambering. Bloody ugly!!!
It was offered for sale in June 2000.

Here you can see Stanley's name stamped on the tang.
