Cold Weather shirts - not cotton

Looking for ideas for cold weather shirts for hunting and casual purposes.

I've always been told cotton is not good for cold weather. Yet almost all of my hunting and casual shirts which could be used for hunting are cotton.

What are you guys wearing underneath as shirts for cold weather hunting?

A number of modern fabrics, polar fleece etc are often worn nowadays of course, in lighter weights as shirts.

With weight restrictions on airflights, I am also looking for shirts which can be worn under jumpers and coats for hunting, but also double up as casual wear when overseas. So not looking for too much or only camo.

Wool? Scratchy and heavy if wet?

Other fabrics?

Show some photos and links if you have them.

Amongst some of the better ones,
all offer good fleece gear,i have all three makers in various weights,just getting some together for tonights look about the bush
And there is some surprisingly good stuff out there that is virtually "no name'to be found around the traps.


One thing is that choosing the right weight is important,a heavy fleece on a day that starts cold can be horrible later on, layering is the go.

I don't have cold weather shirts as such but rely on good quality thermals from Paddy Pallin in NZ fine Merino wool and they weigh bugga all. Those and a good Ridgeline 3/4 length jacket over what ever shirt is around (including cotton hunting shirts) and that does me down to zero deg C..

I have some 100% polyester fleece pull over long sleeve jackets that do very well for casual wear with jeans.

Having trouble with the wireless internet today, but the pages I have managed to open, the shirts are too 'bushlike', need shirts that double for non-hunting as well, ie restaurants, museums etc.

Will probably have thermals, a shirt, polar fleece jumper, plus water proof three-layer water proof/wind proof coat.

I wear a lot of UnderArmor here in Montana

I also wear a light layer of wool over the UnderArmor if its really cold with another waterproof layer over it..

IMHO, the best way to address cold weather issue is too dress in layers..

Have a wicking layer closest to your skin..so if you are hiking,etc..it will pull the moisture off of your skin..then an underarmor layer or similar. ..then wool and finally a water proof layer..i use Cabela's MT-50 jacket and pants..

If it gets really cold---minus 10 to minus 30F...I put on heavier wool garments but still put a water proof outside layer on..enables me to sit on the snow or terrain without getting wet and if its snowing or blowing..still keeps the wet off me...

Have been using this system for a long long time..works very well for me.

Agree, layered as you say.

Even in sub zero temps it works and that was with a cotton Camouflage Army shirt over the top of a thermal underwear.
If it got that cold, I put a warm wooly V neck under the short as well and my Mil issue Wool jumper on top.

Yep, no need for a layering discussion,

Looking for actual shirts to buy.

Ripp, thanks for the comments of wool over the thermals under a waterproof layer.

These Swazi Pro-hunter shirts aren't too bad. In charcoal and green. Better cut than the usual bush stuff. Expensive though.

I use this stuff more than for hunting, being out in the weather most of winter for work.

I think any polarfleece is going to be too hot for Southern Italy in September! Where I will be for the first couple of weeks.

I only wear quality fine wool shirts as first layer in cold climate areas.

I ordered a couple of Swazi Pro-hunter shirts to try out. Hopefully they fit as I have been loosing a lot of weight the last three months.

It depends how cold, but I rely on the following layers:
thermals, e.g. icebreaker 200 or 260
micro fleece half zip shirts, e.g. north face
thermal pro fleece top/gilet e.g. north face
down filled top/gilet e.g. north face
coat e.g. Harkila
I don't tend to bother with the hunting brands (except for the coat), as usually you have less choice at a higher cost compared to climbing/snowboarding shops. Well thats my UK perspective at least.

Often can pick up some stuff at camping/outdoor sporting type shops. And far cheaper.

Usual problem is the colours are bright red, blue, purple, yellow or pink!

Sometimes can find a dark green something, but rare.

Guess the non-hunting hikers and bush walkers don't like actually seeing wildlife with all the bright colours they need.

I love the Worsterlon Shirts sold by Cabelas. They're a synthetic, and are great at letting moisture evaporate if you overheat. They are easy to take care of. You can just wash them out in a stream and hang it over a bush, and it'll be dry in 20 minutes because they don't absorb moisture: it will just drip dry. They also wear well (last long), look good, and come in several patterns and colors.

I love SWAZI Gear. I wear a pro hunter almost everyday after September. SWAZI also has the best raincoat I have ever seen. Multi layers of Goretex with a brushed finish. Looked nice enough to go on some pretty upticked driven hunts in England in December yet perfectly fit for a bit of pub crawling later.

Also the Worsterlon shirts from Cabelas and Beretta that Mike mentions are great. Wore them in Alaska when working. Warm, nice looking for meetings and things, can be washed in the sink at night and will dry by morning. The perfect shirt for weather to freezing.

Throw a corduroy sport coat over one and you can go to dinner anywhere.

Orvis has some pretty cool 85% wool 15% silk shirts that look nice. Very tight weave so they are warm and very light. A bit pricey but they do not wrinkle so can be wadded up in the bag, shook out and look freshly ironed.

I also like good moleskin vests and pants. Again Beretta but also Filson. Check out the Filson lightweight wool shirts, pants and vests.

You might look so good you will be on the front of a catalog.

I tend to favour good Merino wool and Swazi but those Orvis 85% wool 15% Silk sound good.

Let me throw another factor into the mix. A good friend of mine almost died in a fire, hunting muskox several years ago but he was wearing 100% wool unionsuit, he said the day before he had on synthetic's (polyprop) his hunting partner was wearing Polyprop's and did die. He told me if it hadn't been for the wool garments he knows he wouldn't have lived to tell about it. For that reason if I'm hunting and will be around a camp stove or camp fire, I will wear nothing but wool.

Yes, Wool is good for fire protection.
I use Mountain Design (Aus & NZ made),Kathmandu (NZ made but anti hunting), Icebreaker (made in China) and the one in the picture is Chines made Ridgline.

After a bit of looking I found some Aus made gear that looks good.
