I have just been contacted by a friend who is wanting to sell me his 476 Westley Richards double. Does anyone know about this cartridge? I don't have a handy copy of F. Barns book around. He is wanting $5500 for it and says it looks new. Any help is appreciated.

Cheers
Trex

Trex,

MidayUSA has brass, bullets & dies available for the 476 Westley Richards (limited supply). You can also buy new ammo from the Westley Richards website, which also lists the statistics (muzzle velocity, energy,..) for this caliber. It sounds like a great round & would have no hesitation in picking up a nice double in that caliber, especially at that price. Most likely you will have to reload & figure out which load shoots the best for that rifle. Good luck, let me know if you aren't interested, sounds like a really good deal.

don't worry about the ammo... at that price you can't afford to go wrong. if the gun is half of what he describes and even if the barrels are half shot out it's easily worth what he's asking for it.

almost sounds too good to be true? but you did say he's a good friend - your call and good luck.

is it a boxlock or sidelock? (again, at that price it really doesn't matter) just curious.

For a Westley Richards double in a Nitro cartridge it does sound like a very cheap deal. (edited - I am assuming it is a "Westley Richards" made rifle by this comment)

Shoot it if you can and also see if you can get it checked over by someone who knows what they doing.

If it is kosher, I wouldn't worry too much about difficulties in getting ammo, I would go for it and worry about ammo later.

Woodleigh makes projectiles. Bertram makes brass.

A few good questions - of which I am not all that clear on many of them. 1. I am pretty sure that WR was the maker but not 100%. 2. I do know from our brief conversation that the rifle is a family heirloom that now is being sold. (I am told that his wife is against huting and guns - as they are both dangerous so she says). 3. I am sure that if I get the rifle then I will need to reload for it. Thank you fellows for pointing me to links that help me in this manner.

Cheers
Trex

You could also have cases and bullets made by Ken Stewart of Stewart bullets. Let me know if you need his contact details.

Didn't Elmer Keith use a 476 WR on his Buff and other dangerous game?

D

That and a 500 Boswell and a whole bunch of other doubles. I believe John Taffin helped unload all of EK's guns after he died and couldn't believe how many loaded guns were laying around. Ol' Elmer adamantly believed that only "unloaded" guns were dangerous and kept all his guns loaded and whenever somebody visited, they had to handle 'em like a loaded weapon.

Hello Trex,

I had a 476 Westley Richards that I should have never sold! It was a beautiful rifle and had the original case as well. One of the best shooting doubles I have ever owned and very pleasant to shoot. I sold mine 3 years ago for 14,000 US and I am still kicking myself in the ass for doing it. Buy it as soon as you can.
