Amazing coincidence, just watched 'Out of Africa' on cable this afternoon!

It was quite difficult to get a good look at the double carried by Robbie Redford in the film: he kept turning away at the critical moment, or it was in shadow. After the charging lion sequence, it was identifiable as a sidelock, but appeared to be the conventional pattern rather than the characteristic dipped-edge Lancaster trademark.

Karen appeared to be carrying a Mauser with a flattened bolt-knob, and the 'boy' had a cut-down P-14.

These days, the film would be referred to as a 'chick-flick', but there's plenty of hunting in it for the boys.

I loved the frequent insinuation that, for Karen, happiness was a full gun-rack!
(it meant the boys were in town!)

I reckon the rifle in the Lion Charge scene.......

.......is a Rigby sidelock....true dipped edge lockplates!

Unlike the lockplates on a Charles Lancaster, which are usually described as "Leg o' Mutton"....

....as shown on this rifle from Lancaster's 1924 catalogue.

BTW....Welcome to The Fourseventy Club!

470R:
I'm sure you are correct about that rifle being a Rigby, however I personally don't regard it as a "Gun Boo Boo" of any significance. At least it was a Brit sidelock double! That's pretty good for Hollywood I reckon!

BTW, thanks for the welcome to the fourseventy club. Hope I can live up to it! You will notice I refrained from posting details of the new acquisition till I had proven the rifle in the field: too many armchair-experts on this forum already!

On one of my trips to Champlin Firearms in Enid Oklahoma, I held, what I was told was, the double rifle Redford carried in the movie. As I remember it was a Holland&Holland double. A 500/450.

Rusty,

The foresight in the photo on this post looks "Hollandish" (excuse the English !).

The barrels / muzzle look a bit "thin/small" for a 450 - I tried to compare them to mine
but I don't hanve an angled photo.

I'll have to watch the film.

Upon talking with 400 Nitro Express, who was with me on the visit, he confirmed that the rifle was a Holland & Holland, a 500/450.

For the moment I drive by Rungstedlund( Karens house) every morning. I`LL second you John..out of Africa or " Min afrikanske farm" in Danish ought to be watched again.
I can brag a little bit as regarding the Blixen brothers. My very good friend Flemming Fleron`s mother & grandmother both knew Hans & Bror at Næsbyholm, Sweden. Flemmings father hunted with Bror in the late 20´s. Flemming asked his father back in the early 1990`s
about Blix. ..His fathers reply was a big smile and he said " fine fellow indeed... very fine indeed". Flemming father born in 1902, was also the oldest pilot in denmark with a renewed certificate. He was back then 87 years of age and activ still flying. He passed away in 1991.
Flemming still pokes around, finding books for me .

You all probably know that Holts did an off market trade for Dennis Finch Hattons double a few months ago. I t was a battered rebarrelled (for Hatton) Charles Lancaster. Funny thing is the bloke who bought it a few years ago had no interest in guns but a fascination with the Blixon-Hatton story and just "had to have it". As you can imagine he paid a fortune for it (about 70k sterling) so tried to get that amount back when he auctioned it, surprisingly it didn´t sell , a deal was done eventually I believe for a lot less. I was told in the state it was in the gun was worth about 12k, best, Mike

It sounds like like better value that Winston Churchill's false teeth at $26,000, whether or not DFH batted for the other side.
