Winchester 670 Cartridge selection?
      #203776 - 26/02/12 12:53 PM

Hey guys,
Have a Winchester 670 in .243 with a shot out barrel (haven't actually tested how it shoots myself though)

So, suggestions on cartridges for it? Pretty sure they're also made in 30-06, was debating, if it would fit, maybe a 318 WR (I know, poor action choice but it's just what I've had for the last year and a half with no use for) or a 7x57?
Any other suggestions more than welcome.
Tis a pushfeed, not that that's entirely relevant for an Australia only use gun.

Cheers,
Troy.

Ash

The Winchester 670 was an economy version of the push feed Model 70 (Post 64). If memory serves it differs from the Model 70 in that the stock was not walnut, it has a blind magazine and a safety that locks the trigger. Believe that the follower was riveted to the magazine spring and it has no separate bolt lock. The bolt sleeve also differs from the Model 70.

This is a good action and can be used for any cartridge that is suitable in the Model 70. When introduced in the mid 1960's the rifle was also available in .270, .30-06, .264 Win. Mag. and .300 Win. Mag. and possibly, a few others.

Bill

It's a cheap action / rifle, not worth spending a great deal of money on, IMO..
A straight forward re-barrel to 260 Rem, 7-08, 308, 338 Fed, 358 Win or even a 375-08 would be a good option, with no / or very little magazine modifications required..

Cheers

I had one in 308 for a short while, I reckon Spinna has it pegged a 358 Win would be great

.358 - or a 9.3/.308, or .375/.308, or .338 Fed for a decent factory load.

Nice thing about that, is you can use your old (or any .308 based) brass.

Don't discount that case, it's a good one & capable of a steady diet of over 62,000psi loads.

Ash
They came out in Australia in a package deal, 243 and 30/06 with Weaver mounts and a cheap 4x Weaver scope. Had one in 30/06 and it was fine for a bush rifle. Had one gunsmith complain that they were a bit difficult a time to line a scope on because of the accuracy of the holes for mount bases on the action. Have seen one split a stock in two pieces when separated. Still they were good value and you should be able to rechamber to any of the 30/06 family.

Hi Ash, don't discount the .338 Federal. I have a Remington 700 originally in .243 that my father gave me as a gift 35 years ago, well it was past it's prime so had Maddco rebarrel it in .338. It is a treat to use on pigs , goats and scrub cattle. As Daryl said that .308 case is very efficient and seems to perform out of proportion to it's size. I run 200 gr Woodlieghs in mine and they have never let me down. Anyway good luck with what ever you decide i am sure it will turn out fine

eagleeyes - This one has those mounts, hope they ain't took crooked, never taken them off.

Viking - I didnt, but haven't used either before so can't form a favourite. What i do like though, is with the .358 Winnie maybe having a chamber insert made up and shoot .38 special or .357 magnum through it? Don't see why that shouldnt work. If anyone has a reason let me know.

This is "neat" in my books, too. (picture) Wonder how they go? (Doubt theyre available in aus, but could load up similar)
Don't spose you've ever tried out the heavies in the .338 Fed? What velocities are they getting in the 250-300gr weights out of them?

Cheers guys,
Ash.

Hi Ash, haven't tried any of the big stuff sadly. Worked up a load in 2208 that chronied out at 2700 fps but settled on the same 200 pp Woodleighs with 42 grns of some 2206 (not 2206H) i still have at 2400 fps. This has been a great load with excellent performance and penetration, but your idea of the .358 has some merit also Good luck with what you decide, it is all part of the fun
