Dbl Rifle Builders Gathering - Interest???
      #203524 - 24/02/12 08:24 AM

I realize that the timing of this is very poor with fuel prices going through the roof, but I am starting this thread just see if there would be any interest in a 2-3 day "Double Rifle Builder's" workshop/gathering?

I am basically looking at this as an opportunity for folks that have built doubles, or are in the process of building a double, to get together and share knowledge first hand. I do not want this to be a situation where I am the only builder in attendance and have to do all the talking and disseminating of information, therefore, having built a double rifle, or being in the process of building one, would be a pre-requisite. If we have some "experts" (read, extraverts) that are willing to put on a demonstration of some kind, then there would be a few "formal" sessions. Otherwise, this would be mostly an informal gathering of like-minded hobbyists/gunsmiths that would like to meet first hand rather than just though the internet forums. I do have 50 yard range, so shooting can be part of the gathering.

My thought right now, would be to host this gathering at my place east of Ft. Collins. Since I host the annual "Elephant Hunt" (big bore shoot) on the second weekend in August, my thought is to "piggy-back" this event with the Elephant Hunt. Hold the workshop on Thurs-Friday before the EH, and the culmination of the two days would the EH on Saturday. There would probably be some cost associated with the event to cover portable toilets, food, logistics, etc. - at a guess, around $100 (maybe a bit less) per attendee.

Once again, I have not made this a plan, I am merely soliciting interest.

Interested?????

Ellis,

How soon do you need a confirmation? I will be traveling to Colorado from later this year regularly on business and may be able to make it. Not promising anything right now, but I would be grateful for more information. Don't have a double rifle, BTW, and I'm not building one, but I do have Bolt rifles and would be happy to attend.

Good hunting!

Sounds like a good idea if budding and existing gunmakers are interested. Hope it works out.

Your annual Elephant hunt is also inspiring.

Thanks guys! There is apparently not much interest in this sort of thing - saves me a bunch of effort.
There will not be a builders gathering.

Thanks again,
Ellis

Since this thread is basically dead, how do I delete it? Or does someone else have to do that?

Dead..?

I don't think so.
Party's just starting.

I do however doubt I'll be able to make it.
How many fellows here are involved in the making of home-brewed double rifles?

B.Bradshaw did stir the pot quite vigorously with his smallbore damascus billet actions.
I'd like to work on that end of the craft this summer. We have a very busy blacksmith shop, and the lead blacksmith is enthusiastic on the making of rifle actions.
Hopefully my schedule will permit!!

Cheers

Ellis, I'd like to leave the thread up to see if it stimulates interest in the future. Often it takes a lot of doing to get enough people together.

If it doesn't work this year, let's prepare for a get together next year. we should have more time to get reactions and plan this. Thank you, John, for keeping this up. It would be interesting to see if members outside the USA can also plan similar get togethers in their respective countries.

Good hunting, everyone!

Okay, apparently I was bit hasty. We'll let it run and see what comes of it. Like Mehul Kamdar recommended, perhaps we will look at next year. I would have to have some pretty positive input pretty soon, to get things together for this year. Guess that is why I willing to pull the plug so soon. It is the kind of thing that I would really enjoy, so assume that others would too.

Elephant Hunt: if you go out to the Bunduki Publishing web site (bundukipublishing.com) and look under "Classes", you will find a PDF document with the current information for this year's do.

I am working on a web site for Ellis Brown Custom Shop and hope to have it up and running soon. You will be able to find information about the Elephant Hunt, as well as gunsmithing services that I offer.......once it is up and running.

Thanks,
Ellis

I have gone a few times.
It is a lot of fun with some good regular shooting and then a timed walk up and shoot doublegun competition.
Most of the attendees bring their big guns and are happy to let others shoot them. I make it a point to bring along some rook rifles and whatever else I am working up loads for as well. It is fun to see all the big gun guys get giddy over nice rook rifles

I will be there this year so if anybody here can make it, I will bring whatever gun of mine they want to shoot.

Personally, I would be interested in a builders gathering. I went to one such event a couple years ago (concerning H&K rifles) and picked up a couple very useful points and skills.

Now, the downside is that while I certainly have some experience building my own custom guns, I have zero experience building doubles. Hopefully that will have changed by the time such an event could be organized.

But with enough notice I would definitely be down with buying a ticket to Colorado. It would be well worth it . . .

If we can get enough folks with double rifle building experience (4-6??),then I would be comfortable with opening things up for "newbies". I don't have any issue with newbies, I just don't want to be the only one disseminating information - I did that once and it was a lot of talking for me and very draining. I would really prefer a forum where other people can/will share as well. It is better for everyone involved - more & better information. Most of you already know the basic way I do things - at least if you have read my book. I hope we can make this work - should be great time for everyone.

Elephant Hunt: perhaps I didn't cover that as well as I could have. This started as an informal gathering of some friends that had never shot a double rifle, but wanted to. Another friend and I had double rifles, so we planned a Saturday and shot the doubles. That was at least 14-15 years ago. Everyone kept asking "are we going to shoot the double rifles again?", so we planned a weekend every year. After a couple of years it began to grow and kind of became an "official" shoot in 2000. It is still pretty informal, with no serious, "take home a trophy", kind of competition. Just a full afternoon of shooting. A chance for guys, new to double rifles, to get a chance to shoot one, and the rest of us getting a chance to shoot something we have never shot before. We also shoot African Express bolt guns (techincally .375 H&H or bigger, but that is not a hard, fast rule. Come to think of it, it not really a rule at all!). We do limit it to sporting arms. As Huvius said, we do have a timed event that is supposed simulate shooting under pressure, at "charging" game. Shooting usually runs from noon to 6:30-7:00, and then, once the guns are put away, a dram or more of your favorite adult beverage, cigars (actually, I guess those are all day), and a "bring-your-own-meat" & something to share, BBQ. Eating and lies last until you want to go home or go to bed. We always have hunting camp set up, so you bunk out on a cot in the wall tent, if you need/want. Also have some room for motor homes or campers - as long as they are self contained. Mostly, just a fun day of shooting and good company.

Ellis,

I don't know what other members' gunsmithing skill levels are, but my own are zero. However, I do hope to have a double rifle built later this year as a divorce gift to myself and it will be a Verney-Carron. I would be happy to learn from whoever is willing to teach newcomers and interested amateurs whatever they have time for.

Your timed shooting matches sound very like the Big Game Rifle Club of North America matches which are sponsored by these very forums. These are held twice a year in Lodi WI and the parent club, the BGRC of Australia, has held international matches in association with other groups in Maryland and California in the past. As far as I am aware, none of the participants in the Midwest in particular even know of a Colorado match. Some members come for the Lodi WI matches from as far as North Dakota.

Again, the time may be short for such an event this year, but let us talk. Perhaps, by next year, we should have the numbers that would make this a big success. I hope the BGRC USA and Australia members would step in, as would Canadian members. This is an excellent idea and with a little time, it should be possible to make a big success of it.

Good hunting!

Looks like the second Saturday in August next year (2013) will be the 10th - that will be the date of the Elephant Hunt. That would make the potential dates for a gathering (Conclave??) August 8th & 9th. At least that would work well for me.
