Treasures from my travels - a Chess Table from Sri Lanka.

With the table top reversed.

Different, but fits very well with the style of the Indian / Rajasthan chess pieces. And as they are so large they needed a huge board to fit onto. Makes a nice unusual table when reversed as well. It survived quite well sitting in a quarantine freezer for six weeks too. I need to have a glass top made to fit within the wooden border, perhaps with a couple of handles to make it easy to swap around. The glass should fit both sides of the table fine whichever is being used at the time.

My chess partner Blitzen, he lets me win.

Treasures from my travels - Garden furniture from Sri Lanka.

Garden furniture commissioned in Sri Lanka. Asian elephants and stylised flora from Sri Lanka.

The table is heavily carved and needs a glass pane or table top to be added.

Being enjoyed.

Lovely collection mate!
Quite a remarkable set(s), would have cost a few quid to get home - but very well worth it!

What every travelling gentleman adventurer needs!

Or for the home safari mancave.

Wine, liquor, chess and games,crystal and books. It must have a humidor too.

And a Unimog truck camper to transport it.

Amazing and beautifully made piece of kit, Nitrox!
A similar one for transporting your battery of safari rifles would make the perfect matching and a nice pair.

I used to travel regularly every week. Only 80 kms by car. Worked at a winery. Lived at my city house. My parents farm an0nd vineyard only 15 one away from work. Usually lived there during the week and the city on weekends. Wrong way around. One should be in the country on weekends.

Doing all that travel lugging luggage around was a pain in the arse. My mania for carrying excessive stuff around probably came from back then.

But I desired an old style travelling trunk from those days. Polished shoes, suits, dress shirts, jackets, dinner suit, casual clothes, cufflinks, tie bars, silk ties, all or some could be carried in a steamer travelling trunk. In reality not all of that but some.

I even wondered if I could make one? Modern plastic trunks don't work.

I DO have a lovely navy blue steamer travelling trunk now. In good usuable condition.

BUT it is TOO BIG!!! It won't fit in a cars boot, or back seat. Not even into my Landcruiser. Not the rear seat. It might in the rear section but I have a cargo barrier, divdervab0nd shelf in mine. Fits an engel and jerry can on a side. Similar on the other. But no steamer trunk!

Only the roof rack. They are heavy! And not waterproof. Also not wheels on the bottom. Designed for the blackamatics trolley or handcart.

Mine has travelled at the very least from Copenhagen to Lima, Peru.

Will takes some photos one day.

They should be very useful.

Maybe one day I will have a Landcruiser Troopie and it can be my permanent travelling wardrobe. After all even in the bush has dressing for dinner completely died out?!

I would make up such a trunk for:
- clothes etc steamer trunk;
- mobile bar plus;
- mobile reloading station! Usuable in thecshed, in front of the tv, in the bush camp.

Like campaign furniture,vdesigned for travel. Royal courts in mediaeval times had furniture designed for travel.

I had a large blue steamer trunk with brass reinforced corners & brass latch, for when I joined "The Force" (RCMP) It was a necessary bit of kit. It was lined with thin cedar as well. We got rid of it a bunch of years back - taking up space and being quite old, was sort-of falling apart. I think maybe wife might have sold it.
It was "shipped" wherever I went, by truck, which was expensive. As long as the gvt. was paying the transfer, all was well. Shipping large items by truck is very expensive, but it followed me for 2 moves (in my truck), after leaving the Force, to where we are now. One of my daughters brushed her leg against it walking by and needed a bunch of stitches to close the wound from the brass lock/clasp.
Mine looked just like this, with blue-enameled tin outside.

HA!- it actually looked identical to that one. LOL

Very nice trunk Daryl; would fairly deserve a bit of restoration!

I'll have to shrink Daryl's image.

My steamer trunk is one of the fold open wardrobe types.
