Calici Resistant Rabbits
      #203147 - 21/02/12 08:20 PM

Just saw a news article where down in Deniliquin there are rabbits that are now resistant to the introduced Calici virus.

I can remember taking 250 rounds of .22-250 out for an afternoon bunny busting and taking none home.

Bad for farmers, but let the good times roll again ....

That would be a blast, if you could get set up 400 to 600yards or even more away from them. Then it would be more like shooting gophers. Really large ones.

I think some Rabbits have been resistant to it since inception. Like any desease in any population, their are always a few that don't get affected.

My first big bunny shoot was at Booligal !!!
99 rabbits in a few hours, some of which were
shot and a few "run down" by us. Those were
the days.

The disease works apparently by skipping generations through resistance. One generation is resistant and then there offspring are not due to slight mutations of the virus.

Pretty sure that is how it works.

I have been dissappointed many times in the past 15 years, see a population in an area slowly build and then be wiped-out virtually overnight.

Not that I am aware. I think it is more that a very, very small percentage show an immunity and they form the breeding stock and then succesive generations will become succeptible again when the virus mutates or they loose the susceptibility by generation - I dont know what the exact mechanism is. I did a bit of research on it way back when it was released as I was covering the story for some newspapers and magazines. Havent kept up with the science of it since then and I am sure much has been learnt. It sure is a very successful virus.

Sounds like it is the same as Mxyo, a few always survive to breed.

G'Day Fella's,

Yeah!
Come on Bunnies, get to work doing what you do best!!!

I've hunted and shot my fair share of various critters over the years but all things considered, a day spent bustin Bunnies, is bloody hard to beat!

Doh!

Bloody oath. In the early spring on an afternoon with a pocket full of .22 shorts and a single shot...... I'm going up to the shed now to get drunk and cry quietly in the corner.

Noticed lots of bunnies in one of my vineyards last week.

You know the look that as you approach - I was on a quad bike- there was a seemingly endless amount of bunnies running for their warrens. In another spot, we have an old railway line mound. All the bunnies ran out of the vines, where there is some green grass, through the fence and over the mound.

Probably only a dozen in each place but still looks like a lot.

I put it to being dry. Moisture always helps the disease kill them off.

Maybee thats just because there are more mozzies with a bit of moisture around and its the mozzies that spread it.Rabbits will survive mixo if they are given (or can find food) it mostly just blinds them. I remember when calici first appeared, and I don't know if it was correct but it was said that any that survive will then be immune, dunno about thier offspring.

cheers Gaff
