Help needed with a refinish.
      #203084 - 21/02/12 06:38 AM

Guys

I've decided to have a go at refinishing an old M1910 rifle of mine. It has some light pitting on barrel and general discoloration. Also the stock has seen better days.

My plan is to polish and rust blue the metal work and refinish the stock.

When I get to the polishing/blueing stage is it normal to part the barrel from the action or leave them assembled?

Cheers.

GG

Leave assembled. That way there's no chance of barrel vise/wrench marks in the finish.

Regarding polishing, as AFRO408 says, it's pointless to go too fine, when polishing for a rust blue. 320 grit is easily fine enough.

Edit: Open to all. If you're interested in rust bluing, PM me your e-mail addy. I've written up a PDF how-to doco, on making up of a well proven basic aqua regia/iron rusting solution, with references. An expansion of a post I put up here in '05. This requires sources for concentrated Nitric [and maybe Hydrochloric] acids only, of the hard-to-source components.

De nada. Drop me your e-mail addy in a PM for that writeup.

BTW, the advice given on carding over at AR is good too.

One thing though, you need to use Fine [000 or 0000 grade] degreased steel wool for the carding. Kitchen stuff is too coarse. You can get stainless carding brushes from Brownell's [hand and wheel] too.
