As the title says, how will a Leupold VX-II 1-4x20mm go on a .458 Win Mag? Eye relief is listed s 4.3"-3.8". This isn't going on a rifle to be used for dangerous game (maybe a water buff, one day).
Anyone else use one? Or are they suitable? They seem to be the cheapest i cna find but are still made by a decent company (without having used a Leupold, people seem to rate them highly). Ive no idea on scopes for larger rifles.
Cheers, Ash

I personally have used Leupolds on my .375 H&H and on my .416's--have used VX3--1.5 -5 and 1.75-6 have NEVER had a problem with any of them...
if you are asking if them will hold up..based on my experience..you probably stand as good of a chance with them as most other brands out there..some scopes just give up..have seen it happen in Leupolds, swarovski's, etc...

Go for it. It will be fine and I see Cleaver has them for $319 ATM.

I have a 2nd hand VXIIc 1-4x20 on my CZ.416 Rigby. I posted it to the custom shop for a service and had a #4 reticle and click adjustment turrets fitted. Like new and no problems.
Be aware the shotgun models have parralax set at 75 yards which is about right for a DG rifle.

I have uses a 1-4 VX11 on my .416 Taylor since 1992, at least 400 shots. This scope is certainly robust!!

What they said!
Mine's on my Ruger Hawkeye .416. Works a treat.
I also had the same scope on my Ruger #1 in .458 Lott.

I am generally a fixed power guy when it comes to heavy kickers. They have fewer parts and the eye relief is always the same. I have used a fixed 2.5 ultra-light Leupold on my .458. It weighs 6 ounces and has 5 inches of eye relief. Nikon makes a 1-4 power Safari style scope with a 1 inch tube that has slightly better eye relief than the Leupold 1-4. I have one of these Nikon's on my Ruger #1 in .303 British. The rings are very far forward on the #1's and the generous eye relief means I don't have to use extension rings on the #1 and bugger up the aesthetics. I use and like both brands.
Good Luck

I used a 2X Leupold on my M70 in .458 Alaskan with 500's at 2,200fps and 400's running 2,300 to 2,400fps - a really fine scope for this calibre. It's light, gives a wide sight picture and is all the power needed for game likely to be shot with this round.
I do not favor variables on thumpers - too many internal parts that can more easily go wrong. A straight 2X or 2 1/2X would be my choice.

Have a mate in the 'Towers who has a .510" A&M - fires a 800gn slug at 1900fps! Really gives you a jolt, it had a 1-4 power Leopold on it.....it stood up to the recoil better than I did! I have a .500NE - Lumpa's leaves mine for dead! Any problems with a Leopold....I think not! 93x64mm

I WILL mention here that I've also used old steel tube Weaver 2 1/2X, along with Bushnell Scope Chief 2 1/2" scopes on the .458s - NEVER a problem. These scopes worked for over 15,000rounds on my .3, .458 rifles. There will be no problems with the Leuy.
