Shooting carp in my creek.
      #202619 - 16/02/12 08:04 AM

Shot these two and 19 others all the same size in the last two weeks.
I wont stop till I get them all as they are in long holes separated by gravel beds during this dry time.

Ah John, shooting carp is good fun and does a good service tot he bush IMHO.

They are a good size as well.

Do you leave them on the bank for the hawks / herons to eat ?
They always seem to appreciate a good feed when we did.

The murray darling is once again going to be plagued with carp, i dont think professional and amatuer fishing will have any sort of impact on them what is required is some sort of biological control.
With such a high flood level heading down the darling carp will be spread far and wide and will be found in creeks, dams and areas where they have not been seen before.

Dirty

Agree, they and their eggs / fingerlings will have been spread far and wide in the last couple of years all over the 4 eastern states.

Biological control is the only way.

I believe that the person who was turning Carp into fertilizer isn't even allowed to net carp to do that now.

The best biological control for carp is greater numbers of native fish, especially Murray cod, being present. We have seen this very clearly in the Upper Murray Darline in Northern NSW. Cod numbers go up - carp numbers going down, dramatically!!!

Makes sense, doesnt it!!

Delicacy in Europe. Visited a friend in Hamburg and went to the restaurant under the Rathaus (Town Hall) in Hamburg. My friend had a huge carp for dinner, half of it filled the plate, then they brought him the other half. I had wild boar.

I wonder how they eat them with all the bones when we can't?

This subject always mkakes me smile, anglers in Europe, esp from UK will happily pay 300 GBP a week to fish for big carp then tenderly release them, other European nations love to eat them. A few years ago I was in Seville for a couple of days and the Guadalquvir runs through. I thought I try an hours fishing, thing is stuffed with carp, I think I caught about 6 in an hour, put them all back which greatly puzzled 4 french tourists watching from the bridge, they couldnīt understand why I didnīt keep them to eat. I know you Ozzies hate them ! best, Mike

I have eaten carp soup prepared by some Hungarian tourists in Menindee NSW it wasnt too bad it had a lot of paprika and onion in it and was prepared by bleeding, removing certain bones and scraping & scraping the skin until it stopped producing slime ,they said that it is eaten on special occasions like christmass.
The main reason that Ausies dont bother eating them is because they taste like crap, we are blessed with some of the best eating fish in the world and a feed of top eating fish can be caught in any part of the country so why would we bother with a fish that requires special preparation etc before eating it and is still only an average feed.

I think fish ladders incorporating a trap to sort the fish as they move through it are a great idea to control migration of introduced fish i would like to see more of them on the darling and its tributaries.

Right about now the carp in the Murray River swamps are spawning or whatever it is called or doing.

Masses of fish many dozens churning around in a metre radius circle.

Remember many years ago going out to check out a duck swamp, Katarapko, now turned into some sort of BS National Park, instead of a duck swamp, with the carp doing this. In January or Feb. We tried to spear fish them using an axe handle with a knife taped to it. Killed the fish, but failed to hook them so they flopped off into the muddy water. Couldn't miss when they were so thick churning around like that. We were probably seventeen at the time.

BTW anyone know what the carp were doing?

NitroX.

For a long time I thought the Cod were getting on top of the Carp but with three big wet years they are back to full strength I feel.

G'Day Fella's,

Ahhhh.....the good old days!

This brings back memories of a mate of mine Tull and myself shootin Carp, in the Molonglo River!

Tull used have the lease on the land where the Molonglo ran through, just west of the Canberra CBD.
In one part of this area, the river runs through some gorge country with 40 meter high vertical walls on one side. We'd sit up there, 20 meters apart and "Get Up Em" with our .308's, when ever one chose to raise its head to the surface or near enough to it. As always, a direct hit was best but even a close miss, would stun them long enough to finish them off!

Forgot to mention, this location was probably under 10 minutes drive, to Australia's, National Parliament House and even less, to the CBD!

Ahhhh.....the good old days!

FJWH!!!

Way back when I was in the UK, the Carp seemed to live in much clearer water or didn't seem to stir it up as much like the ones in Aussie rivers do.

It's the mud here that makes them taste like crap, although
compared to what else we have to eat, they do taste like crap.

Sorry mike, you've lost me on that one

Darwin / NT is an awesome fishing location.

500Nitro, just an allusion to where you said they taste like crap to the other fish you have there to eat, I was agreeing with you. Iīll be back one day Gryph, if business would pick up I might be able to swangle a bus trip to Singapore then do the hop over but at the moment things are tough
best

They dont taste like crap it is that they are full of bones.

The Italians at home used to make fish patties out of them and grind the bones up.

Well try some in the billabongs / creeks in NSW, you can taste the mud. Agree that they are full of bones.

I had heard fish cakes are one of the better ways
to eat them.
