I know bugger all on values but @ $55 bigs I would have thought that it would have brought far more due to the name associated with it. What a piece of history!

I think that is quite a mark up on that gun due solely to ownership. A lot of these older guns were owned by some very interesting individuals who accomplished some amazing feats but add no mark up to the firearm save an interesting side note.

I'd rather put the money into a bunch of trips to Africa and make my own history.
I liken the buying of such provenance to buying another man's trophy.

This is the famous double rifle used by W.D.M.Bell on his 1912 safari. It is written um in Wanderings of an Elepahnt hunter as his 318 Westley Richards. I have the factory letter giving all provinance, and Col Baker of Thomas Bland and Sons personally handled the gun and critiqued it. It has been valued at 100,000 dollars by him, if restored. It is in the condition I received it, that is worn as by being used extensivly on Safari. It is regulated for 250 grain bullets. It fires, and is in excellent condition, other than the ejectors were removed by someone in the past. Bell may have done it, as he was not a fan of ejectors, as they made noise. THis is a wonderful gun, untouched other than the ejectors, since it was made in August 1911.

$10,000 for the gun and $45,000 for the provenance !!!
Since I cant see the description, I don't know condition / ejector / extractor but I can't see that gun being worth any more than a MAXIMUM $18,000 if it didn't have the link with Bell.
What are other people's thoughts ?

I think it is a lot for the provenance. If the seller thinks there is a big following of Bell collectors, he should go to auction. As to restoring the gun doubling the value well....

Well, to be honest, I wouldn't want it restored, I'd want it exactly as it is, nicks, dents, scratches and all.
100,000 ? I find that hard to believe.

but I guess all has now been posted in this thread?

kamilaroi, I think you are maybe a bit high. $35k maybe. Finch Hattons double was up for sale at Holts a while back, didn´t make the reserve but that was because the chap who put it up for sale had paid far too high a price for it in the first place and was trying to get his money back, he failed and a deal was done after I believe at a considerably lower price. "valued at 100k $" Ask him for his bid best

Kam
35K Pounds is US$55,000 !!!!
Are you being serious ?
Mike The auction of Finch Hatton's double was a joke that first time around - I was on the other end of the phone bidding - up to a point, it was crazy how it took off between the two bidders.

Mike,
I put it "at best" as it's perhaps a basic toughened A&D for "high pressure" as the WR catalogues and others of the time noted. As many know provenance is for the "cunning sewer" hoping to boost their margin.
FWIW I never have a dog in the fight.

K.

Jesus Kam, you like embellishing it up.
I call it a Plain Jane Boxlock ejector with probably a hidden third bite if it doesn't have a Greener cross bolt.
Plain wood, little engraving - just a good, solid working gun of the period.
You say toughened, metal might be but it has no bolsters.
