It is still being produced by H&H, and they probably sell about 6 of them a year, but at the price they demand, that's probably profitable for them....

As to the rest of the world, it is as dead as last years Moose, it never had a chance, it duplicated the 416 Remington for all practical purposes..You would think they could have been a little more inventive!

Actually its probably a great little round, but just isn't needed, all those basis are covered. They would have been smart IMO to adopt the 404 Jefferys, whoever comes out with that one first is going to be the winner, and it looks like CZ is running for first place...

I love the ballistics of the .404 Jeffery, I'd like to have had that as an option in my DR when I bought it.

Ray:
You are missing the point, quite deliberately I'm sure!
Holland & Holland were not seeking ballistic innovation, and in no way attempted to 'improve' the already proven! They brought out these proprietary cartridges simply to offer their exclusive clientele something 'special'.

Let the proletariat squabble over ballistics and pressure-spikes in 'ordinary' cartridges like the .416 Remington, a Holland & Holland patron jolly-well deserves a Holland & Holland chambering!

In any case Ray you give yourself away: no cartridge is "deader than last year's moose" more than the .404 Jeffery, yet we love it dearly. ...not for the ballistics, which are duplicated or exceeded by a number of modern cartridges, but because it is jolly-well the .404 Jeffery!

Why deny a Holland client this same sentiment!?!

I'd still like to have a 400H&H, but it will have to be built of an old magnum mauser... which I have to find first.... and I don't even have my 375 anymore, so I'll have to get that back too....

so its a ways off...

needless to say, I like the round, but commercially it was stillborn.

the 404 is choice, though.

The 400 H&H is a natural re-chamber for the new Ruger No1 405 win, as are the 450/400NEB 3", and 3.25" all three easy conversions, and all three far better than the 405 Win!
