Boar before the storm
      #201157 - 30/01/12 09:38 PM

Whenever there has been rain ( a lot in the last 3 months) I like to drive around and have a look at the pig tracks to see how many pigs there are about, the size of the pigs and where they are coming from.

I had to watch the wind this morning while two planes sprayed the cotton for grubs.
Took this opportunity to have a look at our block close to town (about 3kms).

Saw there had been a couple of pigs about with one bigger fella on his own.
I had planned on taking the dogs out early in the morning before work to look for him.

Right on dark I went for a drive around the same stubble paddock before the storm hit.

By fatboy404 at 2012-01-30

Spotted him a long way out so continued to drive around to get down wind of him and stalk in.
Grabbed my 458 from behind the seat (never go anywhere without a rifle), a hand full of bullets and started the 7 or 800 yard stalk.
Sorry about the photo's but they were with my phone.

Got to within 30 yards of him before he knew I was there.
The stubble was crunchy under foot so it was hard to be quiet.
I took one last photo with my phone and put it in my pocket.

I flicked the safety off on the Brno and drilled him with a 400 grain Woodliegh PP.

He was really old and slightly poor in condition but that is normal for pigs on the red country here.
No wonder he was poor,he has been eating sticks !.

I'm glad I got him this afternoon as I can sleep in tomorrow.

Good pics.

Without revealing any secrets, where do they come from. A lot of the country looks like farming country, paddocks etc. Is there swamps, rivers, rough country or something nearby where they come from?

This paddock.
They can come from three directions. The main one being about 3 kms away that is undeveloped timber country with a water coarse through it.
Normally they pad to the crop at about 8 or 9 o'clock at night and travel home as the sun is about to come up.

Depending on the direction it will change my plan of attack.
From the SW I will go on a full moon and take my dogs and walk the grass country for them (in the nieghbours) as they seem to come late because they travel a long way. There is not much cover so the first bit of noise and they are gone.
From the N I will go during the day and find where they are camping as it is mellon hole country with grass in it. They lay up in this as it is good cover and most of the time they have water.
From the W I will go real early in the morning and catch them before they cover the 3kms home.
You can't make rules as they do their own thing but basicly that is their pattern.

This paddock is the "last frontier" as there is no more cropping for about 30kms ? west of it.

The roo's give it a hammering at times and can be good for pigs as well.
Just not big numbers.

What was the crop in the paddock? Looks like grain stubble.

That first pic looks like it should be entered in the local ag show photo comp. Long snout on that pig. Is that normal for your area N ? Looks like a bit of a Captain Cooker.
