Which stag if any would you take?
      #20048 - 27/10/04 01:39 AM

Rusa experts, or want-to-be-experts, which stag is bigger and which would score better? And why if you know?

Which one would you take if given a chance?

Thanks

No 1:

No: 2

Same stag - no: 2

Stag no. 3

Stag no. 4

Having never hunted one Id take em all.LOL
No 3 Looks to carry a lot of mass and from the coloration of its face and neck looks like an older aged class Male.
He would be taken with smiles all around Id guess.

I like weight of antlers so its no 3 for me though the angle of pic shortens his length visually to me John rather heavy and shorter than long thin shit anyday mate, same go`s for sambar.

Oooee - havnt seen that pic - yeah # 3 for me too. Make a great mount.
I'd also say his antlers are the same length or a little longer than #2.

Nitro

No expert for sure but I can give you some tips if you want to know about picking a good one.

No.3 is a bit hard to tell, as Gryphon suggested because of the angle - looking up his nose. I dont think however he has a real lot of length and would probably be lucky to make 30in. Still probably a nice trophy for someone with a bit of weight and all and not bad for an Aussie Rusa. Having said that there are some good free-range ones getting about now, esp. south east QLD to compare them to.

The other stags are puppies, either no length, weight or both. To pick length compare the main beam length to the lenth of its face, if its only 2x the length it will not get a real lot of length. Need to find one closer to three times to get those proper long Rusa antlers. Weight is easy to pick, especially at normal hunting distances. If you are less than 200m and you need your binos to check weight forget it. Heavy, old stags should stand out like the proverbial dogs nuts - same as reds/fallow/buffalo - lots of different critters.

Stag 2 is a good example - light sticks, and no length either. If you were looking at him at a distance you would be straining your eyes to see his antler weight properly, especially with a bit of bush backdrop.

I'm not trying to be a smart arse here either just saying it like it is.

For those of you who havent seen what Im talking about I will post this image of a big New Caledonia rusa stag to show what Im talking about. This one is 34inches main beam - thats no world record for length either and enough 30-34inch stags can be taken in Australia, both wild & free and in game reserves. This ones got weight too - lots of it which makes it a truly great trophy. The biggest stags in New Cal grow up to 38 inches or more in the main beam!

Great photos Nitro - That new camera works great eh!

If I were to guess I would say 1 and 3 are the same animal also. And if these three animals are my only choice...1/3 dies!

I will reply in one post.

First no. 1 and no. 3 are the same deer. Just a different angle. Not trying to trick anyone but I wanted to see if a different angle made a difference to people's comments. Often a stag looks great, when in profile his antlers look thinner. No. 1/3 I would have shot.

Double D - well done.

No. 4 I thought was also the same as 1,3 until I blew the photo up.

Coues

No 1,3 for me too. The only one with thickness to its antlers.

Gryphon

Great to see you back.

Gryphon and Sam,

No 3's antlers are a little short as you can see in pic 1.

Matt

Thanks for the tips. You will have to give me a really good deal on New Calendonia one day if you keep on showing those NC stags.

The camera does work well.
