American Top 5

I haven't hunted in North America. But would love to and am setting myself a 5 year target. (good to set targets otherwise it never happens)

If you had to name the top 5 trophies or game animals to hunt, what in you opinion are they? And where?

If you haven't hunted them yourselves that's fine. I'm interested in what you would WANT to hunt. And if you have taken them as well, congratulations.

Here's my go at it. Animals I would rate as a foreignor. Could change though.

1. Grizzly bear (of whatever persuasion)

2. Elk

3. Moose

4. Big Horn Sheep

5. Mountain Goat

But that leaves out A LOT of other game animals. Its a tough choice.

But if I get over there I would probably go for a bear/deer combo.

If to Alaska or North Western Canada - a moose and grizzly combo.

If to the US a black bear and mule or whitetail mix.

Elk may be a little out of my pocket range.

I would really like to hunt bear (and try eating it too - I know you can eat black bear - can you eat brown or grizzly bear?). One day would like to look at Kamchatka as well.

I believe the American top five are:

Kodiak Brown Bear (Or Grizzly)
Rocky Mountain Elk
Mule Deer
Sheep (Any of the four species)
Moose (Shiras, Alaskan or Canadian)

I have been fortunate and have harvested all five. If someone was to offer Pronghorn, Whitetail, Mountain Lion, or Mountain Goat to the list, I would be hard pressed to argue against.

For me on a American hunt the two most wanted would be Whitetail and Black Bear of course if money was no issue I change Black to Kodiak.

I reckon any five of the above posts with a quick sneak trip on a big polar bear as well over the border.

Top five American animals to me would be the following based soley on the difficulty to obtain:

1) All of the sheep
2) Alaskan Brown/Grizzly bear
3) Trophy Mule Deer
4) Trophy Elk
5) Trophy Coues Deer

Note that some of the animals contain the word "trophy". A small or representative animal for these species is another thing entirely.

Here are the top 5 trophies in NA for me:

1. Bighorn sheep. Majestic animals in rugged country. It just does not get any better than this. I will be entering the Colorado drawing for these animals until I draw. Someday I will hunt them.

2. Kodiak Bear. HUGE powerful bears. Very expensive hunt. I would love to hunt them, but due to economics, I will stick with black bears!

3. Rocky Mountain elk. I was lucky enough to take a 5x6 herd bull with my bow last year in a wilderness area. I will be back there next year! The remote high country of Colorado is my favorite place on earth.

4. Mule deer buck. I have never hunted them, but I have seen many nice bucks while elk hunting out West. If the price of elk tags keep going up, I will switch to mulie hunting!

5. Trophy whitetail buck. These deer are almost everywhere, but true tropies are tough to come by. When they are old enough to have a nice rack, thet tend to be extremely smart and difficult to hunt. I love the challenge!

Hell, if all goes well while I'm in the states next year for the Dallas show I will hopefully bag a whitetail and maybe a hog or two.

In terms of what species are hunted the most, they are:

1. Whitetail Deer
2. Mule Deer
3. Pronghorn
4. Elk
5. Caribou

The above listing is based on the number of hunters pursuing the listed game in any given year.

1) Dall sheep- I'd rank it one because the hunt can be grueling if you're not in great shape to hike through those beautiful Alaskan hills. A real test for any hunter.

2) Brown/Grizz.- a very dangerous and majestic animal. Maybe the only prey in North America that can really scare you.

3)Moose.-Big, tough and the ground shakes when the fall. Just great.

4) Mountain Lion (or cougar) Very elusive, even with dogs. But a stunningly beautful animal to take as a trophy.

5) Turkey. Yes I know...Turkey! But you know, turkeys require perhaps more disipline to hunt than anyone realizes and they're native to America. A creature unique to this great land.

Ovis

Why do you have the big bears in the top two spots? Just curoius.

My picks are:

1. Sheep
2. Elk
3. Goat
4. Caribou
5. Mule deer

I would throw Grizzly bear into the number 2 spot if bow hunting.

Adam,

Well, I've been bear hunting 35-36 years now.......bit of an obsession w/me........the inland grizzly I put at #1 for me is one that is a resident of the far north of AK......that bear is smaller, has a tough time making a living in that hard land, and shares the same terrain as the Dall's sheep.......I watched one once, early in the morning on a Sept. day, as he scrapped a berry patch on the side of a mountain in the Brook's......the morning sun had him all a-glow......then, for whatever reason, he took off and ran 600-700meters straight up the mountain, turned around and ran back to his patch......power, speed, and freedom.......what a picture I have in my mind of that day.

#2, the coastal grizzly(brownie), is huge, powerful, and resides in equally forboding country;country as intimidating as the animal you're hunting; alder jungles, areas of rain, snow, ice, and high winds for days at a time, coastal mountains, etc.
A grand trophy, it's tough to find a really big one now-a-days.

I'm not sure if that's an answer, but I really obsess over the bears. My #4 choice needs a bit of explanation.......only Canadian black bears need apply......there are some nice black bear in AK, but not like in Canada.......if you allow yourself the time(most important), research your choice of areas and guides, a really big black bear is a very real possibility in Canada.

Maybe my choices are based on the country they're in, too.......after discussing some of those picures of yours with you, big mule deer would replace the elk on my list.

Spring bear are out walking a bit here now....snowed 6cm + here today...next month should be fun.......my Zodiac is ready and my 27 year old son w/the strong back is going along.......he's not a bear hunter, but a hell of a packer.

Take care,

Joe

I appreciate the inclusion of birds (upland would be my preference) as it is surely as grueling as many other NA hunts.

I always tell our guests on pheasant/quail hunts that they need to be ready to go 16 miles on saturday, and another 12 on sunday, and the SHORTEST vegetation we'll be in is 24-36" high... sometimes its ALL 2m+ it can be very difficult physically and from a skill standpoint.

There are two principle dangerous habitats in NA, the Rockies and the Arctic... the NM desert for Elk is a distant, distant 3rd. That said, Dall Sheep, Polar Bear, Arctic Wolf, all deserve a spot, as well as Rocky Mtn Elk...

That would be my top 5....

the 5 I want the worst????

Wild Bison (NWT), Barren Ground Caribou, Actic Wolf, a Classic 6x6 Elk, Dall Sheep.

For now I have to settle for Coyotes, Upland Birds, and Whitetail... hopeing desperately to draw a tag for prairie goats this year...

das mafia,

You don't consider coastal Alaska & BC dangerous game habitat but you do give the Rockies that consideration; just wondering why?

I have 2 top five choices:

#1- A " Deer Slam"

1) Eastern Whitetail Deer(got this one 10 times over)
2) Mule Deer
3) Coues Whitetail deer(this one has skunked me for 4 years)
4) Columbia Blacktail deer
5) Sitka Blacktail Deer

I'm working on mine.
Just representative trophies, B&C not needed for me.

#2 - my "non-deer" goals

1) Mountain Goat
2) Caribou
3) Pronghorn (I finally got this one)
4) Moose
5) Musk Ox

This is my list - what's yours???

If money was no object:

1. Polar Bear

2. Brown Bear

3. Interior Grizzly

4. Bison

5. Alaskan Moose

Looking at this from the perspective of things that can kill you and are generally ill tempered.

Here are two top five lists. First is what I think most would desire, especially based on availability/price (rarest and/or most expensive).

Polar Bear

Grizzly/Brown Bear

Stone Sheep

Desert Bighorn Sheep

Rocky Mountain Elk

My list would be a little different
Dall Sheep

Brown Bear

Glacier Bear

Mountain Goat

Rocky Mountain Elk
