Shaping tang on shotgun guard
      #199845 - 18/01/12 09:55 AM

How do you shape the curve on a shotgun guard so that it fits the pistol grip? I have tried but every time the curve of the tang never fits the curve of the pistol grip. Its been suggested to me that I should heat it before bending . Is that a good idea?
Thanks.

The way I bend thin steel like that is to use a hammer and a piece of hardwood in the vise.

Cut a V groove about an inch or inch and a quarter wide across the end grain, and mount it end up.

With a small ball pein, start tapping the guard while it's straddling the groove, all the while moving it back and forward to keep the curve even. Keep eyeballing it over the hand of the gunstock, as you may have to work in a little different curvature at each end. Carefully done, there shouldn't be any marks on it. Heat shouldn't be necessary, most guards are soft.

I hope this makes sense, it's a lot easier to show how it's done, than write it.

Thank you for that .Sorry Im so late in replying.
I understand your point and I set up as you suggested.I had managed to get pretty close but your method enabled me to get a much closer match .Actually Im fitting this shotgun guard to a pre-war German Zi Di rifle .However Im not game to try inletting it myself.Ive sent it off to a stockmaker.
Best Wishes
