There's a nice looking PH SS in 308NM for sale at a real good price locally. It's a 3 digit serial number with the thumb cut-out and stripper clip guide. Stock has a cheek piece, flat forend, rosewood caps on pistol grip and forend, with no recoil lugs. What's the toughts on this one?

I have two, great tough all rounder...I have barreled mine in stainless.
The 308NM is a great cracker too, will handle heavier bullets better than the 300WM they say.

Interesting comment John..... I haven't heard that about the Norma round, can you elaborate why that may be the case??

Cheers,
Mark.

Just something that I have gleaned from various sources in reading online sites from around the world,I cant put a finger exactly on one at all though.

Though a quick look just now came up with this quote

"The sixth edition of the Hornady Handbook shows that their potent 220 grain InterLock bullet can be driven at a MV of 2300 fps by 60.5 grains of RL-25 powder, and to a MV of 2800 fps by a maximum charge of 75.1 grains of RL-25. The latter is 100 fps faster than the top velocity attainable with this bullet in the .300 Rem SAUM, .300 WSM, or .300 Win. Magnum. These Hornady loads used Norma brass, WLRM primers, and were tested in a rifle with a 24" barrel.

The reloader will find that the .308 Norma will handle bullets heavier than 180 grains every bit as well as (or better than) the .300 Win. Magnum, and considerably better than the new short .300 WSM and .300 Rem. SAUM cartridges. Due to its combination of standard length, a longer neck than most of its competitors, and excellent Norma brass, the .308 Norma Magnum may be the all-around best .300 Magnum cartridge for the dedicated reloader."

Woodbeef - Parker-Hale brought out rifles in that calibre in the 60's here in Australia, she might be an old girl, but if the riflings OK then you'll have yourself a cracker! Had mine (Parker Hale rifle also but rebarrelled) for nearly 30 years - after a lot of heartache for me trying to get it to group I found the best powder to use is AR2213SC (H4831 or IMR4831 for you Americans)
IMR4350 or AR2209 for us Aussies gets the velocity easy, but it may not work in your new toy should you buy - be prepared to do a bit of work for this calibre, but once you find the right load its potential is just as good if not better than the .300 WM - besides it IS the original .30 short magnum!

As a teenager, my first rifle was a .308 Norma Magnum, Parker-Hale Safari, (not such a wise choice as a first rifle, in reflection, though it's performance made good sense on paper). I never shot a thing with it but on one occasion, I aimed at a brush-tailed possum in an old pine tree. I didn't allow for the difference between the scope line and the bullet path up close and so I hit the branch below and in front of it. The branch blew clean off and while flying backwards knocked the possum out of the tree and it lay on the ground senseless. So you could say, even a near miss with this hot-caliber can be deadly.

The Parker Hales built on reconditioned military Mausers like the Safari you describe are the best of them. THe later ones on Santa Barbara commercial actions are not as good.

As I understand it they were not reconditioned action but brand new in the white actions brought back and dumped in storage at the Sparkbrook site after WW2. When P-H acquired the site in 1962 they found metal cages full of these actions and built rifles on them. Well that is what Lewis Potter told me and it seems he spent a lot of his time at the Sparkbook site back then.
