Nice outing last Wednesday
      #199568 - 16/01/12 07:57 AM

Last Wednesday we hunted about 500 ha of our forests. No, we do not have a real Winter here this year, no snow yet. We hunted with 40 guns, a half dozen beaters and 16 dogs to make the game move.
A view from my stand. Not a high seat, but only a cover on the ground.

My contribution to success: Two small males, both shot running in high gear, one at 75 meters, the other at a mere 23m. Rifle: My M1910 Mannlicher-Schoenauer in 9.5x57, 270gr Hornady rn @ 2250 fps mv, 20" barrel, Zeiss "Zielvier" scope. Pigs only dragged to the forest road, ready for transportation.

Total result of the 2 ½ hour hunt: 23 boar, 7 roe, 2 foxes.

Kuduae,

It looks like you and your group had a very good day afield. I especially like the traditional layout of the game on the pine boughs.

Waidmannsheil!

Waidmannsheil. You did well with two boar from that total.

How are the roe shot ie is it selectively done ie no big trophies shot, only yearling males, or something like that?

So you are having a 'warm' winter. We are having a cool summer his year.

It was just mere luck that two single boar tried to pass by my stand, about an hour apart. The rest was only rising the rifle, pushing the safety off, aiming without stopping the swing and pressing the trigger.
As the season for roebucks older than one year is open from May 1 to October 15, we try to avoid shooting bucks in winter. To keep the roe deer population in balance with their environment it is necessary to shoot at least as many does and kids as bucks. Otherwise the damage to young broadleave trees gets out of hand and the deer will suffer from overpopulation. Contrary to the photo above most of our forests consist of beech, oak, maple and ash.
The season for does and kids runs from September 1 to January 31. So we shoot kids and does in autumn and winter.

Very Interesting. As you may know, we have just come out of a severe drought in South east Australia and over the last few years the fallow had to be continually culled to keep numbers in check (on where we hunt, as determined by the property owner).

Same as here for fallow, when on a cull, the rule is does and kids (certain senior members also cull if they come across cull buck animals) (any other species of deer is shot on sight as they are classed as vermin in that particular area).
