Ruger #1....303 Shooter!!
      #199405 - 14/01/12 08:53 AM

Well, after a little tuning, got it dailed in with 174 Hornady RN and 41 grains of IMR4064.It clocked right at 2400fps. Had a little cross wind, gusty 15-20mph,but it still held up! This barrel has a looong throat, could not touch it!

Nice shooting Phillip... what did you do to tune it to that level of accuracy?
Usual barrel tension screw, fore end bedding?

How did it shoot out of the box?

IMR 4064 = ADI 2208, a good powder in my .303 too.

Yes, the throat on the Ruger No 1 .303 is almost unbelievably long... I could just touch the lands with a 215gr bullet barely seated in the case.

Why I'll never know... unless some corporate lawyer thought people would fire surplus MK VIII machine gun ammunition through them and the longer throat would help drop pressure?

I'll have more details tomorrow. My normal process is to sand the inside of the forearm and remove any possible contact, then bed a solid pressure point at the tip.I shoot slow, take my time and not let the barrel heat up. But with 9 other powders used..IMR 4064 is THE one!

Decent factory-type ballistics, too.

Here's what I do to the forearm, sand out the high spots, bed and seal it...
