Poor Man's 12 Bore
      #19913 - 22/10/04 01:54 AM

I am trying to develop loads for a poor mans 12 bore using a TC Encore rifled 12 gauge shotgun barrel. I am using brass cases, black powder and lead bullets. Is there anyone who reloads for a 12 Bore that would be willing to share his reloading information?

Dr. Charlie: A man after my own heart, as I plan on trying the "even poorer man's 12 bore" based on the H&R Ultra Slug rifled shotgun. Here's where I intend to start: With Magtech 12 gauge brass cases, I will load 4 1/2 drams of Fg black (the Paradox load described by Samuel Baker in "Wild Beasts and Their Ways") using 11-gauge Circle Fly wads to account for the larger inside diameter of the brass cases. Bullet will be an 835-grain Paradox style from an NEI mould (Baker says the original Paradox bullet was only 1 3/4 ounces, or about 765 grains). Just making up a dummy load, the 4 1/2 drams (123 grains) when drop-tubed leave room for a wad column just under an inch, which, with some compression, would allow the bullet to be crimped just over the front of the shoulder.
I suspect the modern guns would handle considerably heavier loads, and Baker speaks of the 12 bore rifles of his time taking 10 drams of powder -- 273 grains!

Fellas: I think that conical is from NEI mold 399 on page 14 of the Web catalog -- .732-835.

You may want to talk or email James Gates. He has started production of slugs that are pretty much duplicates of the Paradox. He's getting a little higher velocities from his loaded ammo than the old Paradox loads, but the slug style is essentially the same. He sells both the components and the loaded ammo. His company is called Dixie Slugs and has a couple of different slug types. One is the Terminator which was designed for rifled slug barrels, the Predator designed for smoothbores, and the Xterminator that actually bumps performance up a bit for rifled barrels.

He's written about a few of his tests (interior and exterior ballistics) at http://shootersforum.com/
You'll have to do a search for posts by member James Gates. He's posted a ton of information about these slugs since beginning development.

do a lot with magtech brass from 28 to 12, if you crimp this brass you have to aneal. its a very hard brass.
The RCBS shotgun shell die set is fine for loading slug cartridges, make a wonderful crimp.

Thanks pwm. I have a friend who makes a lot of Snider cases from the 24-gauge brass, and he is always annealing. I will keep an eye out for the RCBS stuff.
