Yeah- isn't that a nice rifle shape.(The rifle's probably OK too)

I thought that Hydro should work. I take this to mean it entered his hind end, or angling up from his left side.

Your are right Daryl.
He was going over a little bank and slightly left so the Hydro entered the left hip area and exited his right eye.

Matt.
I like it and have the game to do it..

500.
Thanks. It is really just a 700 classic style with a bit of tarting up.

Neale,

I know you have lots and lots of pesty fersl pigs, too many not to leave most to rot, but do you ever harvest any for meat?

Any younger, tenderer, cleaner ones for some home pork roasts and sausages?

Quiet often take the hind legs off the young sows, skin them, poke holes in them, put cloves of garlic and onion in them, rub them with salt, peper and a bit of oil then bake in a normal oven or camp oven.

I do the same with goat as well.

Have cooked a couple for the BGR club when we stay over night.

Viking338 always takes an Engel fridge full of meat home with him when he comes out.

I only take legs from "my pigs" as my neighbours poison all the time and I wont take the risk.

And I hate sausages.

We take smaller sows ,Of good country and process them or piglets and raise them on pig grower. Heres a sow we scolded and butchered some of the best pork I have eaten. We make our own bacon by dry rubbing and it doesnt last very long. Comes out like spec.
Generaly the floodplains produce the best pork. Mick
sow bled and hosed down
scolded 2 boiling 1 cold scraping hair off.
Finished product ready for chiller

How do you caution against tropical and other diseases? Trichinosis is one concern for me. Not sure if it is treatable. Never worried too much about diseases from healthy pigs in the south-east... but those NT piggies are a different story.

I believe the super deep freeze is the best option. -20C

Matt, we inspect for worms , also lungs liver for any cysts. Some areas are high in round worm so avoid taking from these ares.
Our biggest concern is getting them to cool quickly. Usual kill in the evening or at night. Or close to the cool room.
The piglets are grown out on pig grower and wormed.
We like our pork cooked well done . Mick

Did you know that some parasites may not be neutralised by cooking alone??

Well I've eaten plenty of NT Pork and it hasn't killed me yet
and I wouldn't say some of the methods of cooking are the best I've seen but that's the way it is.

I do agree with Mick though, get it to the cool room quickly
and have it well cooked.

Re the SE pigs, have seen a few with lots of things on them and left them where they are. Like Mick says, some areas are worse than others.

500nitro, would that be wrapped in paperbark and cooked underground. Comes up pretty good. Mick

LOL

You know the cook so you should know

Well I can say that the Pork tastes a hell of a lot better than Long necked Turtle and Fruit bat, the smell of which made me need another stiff drink.

Sheesh... No I dont have all the answers at all. In fact I dont even know what the rates of occurance of those (heat-resistant) parasites are (in Australia) - but I am interested in what other people are doing, I think any game utilization is awesome. Just trying to get some info.

I have always been dubious about the NT pigs - having talked to a few biologists they really put me off... but the reality is that they may be no different to pigs down south. Who knows?? If anyone has any definitive info - I would appreciate it.

Running shots on vermin are my favouite. Shooting pigs on the move would be most interesting, but since we don't have those here, I contend myself with gophers. I do love the running shots when walking/shooting. Excellent practise.
