Rigby actions pre WW2
      #198920 - 08/01/12 12:34 AM

Hi,

I am new to this forum and would like to have a chance to take the possibility to ask a questions.

I have recently bought a Rigby 275 that was manufactured in 1935.
The Rigby number on the triggerguard and receiverring is 5587 and the Mauser number on the receiver ring and bolt is 1068. I have checked also under the receivering and there are no additional marking.
I doesnt have the typical Oberndorf bolt.

Does anybody know who have supplied actions to Rigby?

That looked like a lively, informative discussion. Shame there is not a translator button for English.

Georgous rifle and accoutrements tazswe. Welcome and that is quite an entrance!!

What we have discussed on this Swedish forum is the action and the scope mount.
There are different opionons about the origin of the mount.
Does anybody know if its a Grifgin & Howe or a German mount?

Very nice Rigby 275. Its very similar to my Rigby High Velocity .275, Rigby number #5382 with a military action and bolt. Mine has the original scope mounts on it (they are the traditional Rigby mounts with the quick detach lever on the front mount). Mine dates from 1932 and if I only had a copy of the next page of the Rigby ledger it would most likely have your rifle on it. You might contact Paul Roberts at "J. Roberts and Sons" to see if they can provide you with a scan of the page with your rifle in it. I'm pretty sure that they have the correct ledger with your gun in it as I physically copied this page from the ledger when I toured the shop in 2005. Is your rifle a High Velocity model (140gr bullet)?

tazwe..most likely the scope sidemount, bolt handle rework, and the safety were done by the same person and i dont think it was rigby,,or at least im sure that it didnt come out of rigbys that way ,looks like they did bring the bolt in closer and shaved some of the shoulder down,, all in all its a good looking user /collectable hunting rifle ,,pics of mine are posted here somewhere...paul

What you have is not a Griffin & Howe mount. It is an AKAH (Albrecht Kind) mount, made in Germany. Judging from the number of used Husqvarna rifles sold in this country with either the base for such a mount or the three threaded holes in the side of the receiver used to secure the base, it must be quite popular in Sweden. Griffin & Howe mounts are secured not only by three screws, but also by two tapered dowel pins, which add greatly to the rigidity of the receiver-base combination.

This is an example of a Griffin & Howe mount. The scope is mounted low enough that the shooter has the same line of sight for both iron sights and scope, so his cheek remains in the same position on the stock, irrespective of which sight he is using. Griffin & Howe used screws with double head thickness to secure their mount bases. Once they were tightly turned into the receiver, the slots were milled off, leaving a base with almost invisible screw heads.

This particular Griffin and Howe mount is an older model with windage adjustment meant for scopes with no internal windage adjustment, or for scopes like this one, with a non-centered reticle.
