I took my airplane for a flight this weekend. 2011 did not see hardly any flying due to issues with the aircraft and conflicting interests.
Now with all the mechanical problems sorted and a fresh prop to tail inspection completed, I'm ready to burn some gas man.
Time to find a good flight instructor and do some refresh training.
They don't call me Bonanza for nothing!

What a coincidence! I just got off the phone with the A&P who maintains my Ercoupe. Like you, I didn't get to fly much last year, but will make up for it this year. Everything is current, all I have to do is break free the time.

1963 Beech Debonair, 225 HP Injected 470 CID, 170 mph at 75% power getting 10 mpg. It's a four seater, but most of the useful load is taken by the long range tanks, 80 gallons. The cessna 182 on the other hand is a sky truck.

My dad took his first lesson at age 60. He fly about 300 hours before losing his medical at 65. Never too late to jump in.

It's amazing when you get talking to the enthusiasts in either group (guns or planes) on how many have these common interests, add machinists in there as well and you start to realize that all require that certain fascination with with mechanical things and what makes them tick! I fly a Maule M-4 220C that is the only family owned single engine aircraft company still in operation in the US and a very good Back Country airplane that has taken me on some very fun shooting/hunting/camping adventures & I am willing to bet that there are many more pilots that share these forums than we might imagine.

I was always very happy to fly a 172, but now after spending time in the 182 there is no going back. With a tailwind we were doing 200 kts over the ground last time out, which made the 172 seem, - slow!
Then I flew in a Robin ( low wing/stick) off of grass when I was in Cornwall, and the apprehension from different controls was quickly erased by the intuitive feeling of flying.
Flying, like hunting, is terribly addictive. Once you start, you can't, and don't want to stop.

Nice plane Bonanza.
When I use to fly I started on Muskateers and advanced to the A36 Bonanza and the Vtail, that is an experience. After flying the Lounge chair around-the Bonanaza's are comfortable, I moved to a Bellanca Decathalon. Aerobatics sure put a new spin on things

Flying an airplane, especially a high performance rig, is very immediate. It demands your attention and mistakes are unforgiving. It's the thinking mans's high adventure sport.

Ok, if some of you are interested in flying, and want to learn about Cessna or Piper; go to Amazon.com and look for my name as author. Tom Murphy. I wrote the Cessna Buyers Guide and Piper Buyers Guide. I'm a writer of aircraft and hunting adventures.
BTW: Bonanza. I owned a 1961 Bech Deb and it was probably the best ,most comfortable, light airplane I ever flew. I really had fun with the throw-over yoke as I would move it into the upright position and tell my passenger we'd take turns turning the wheel. (It works from any position.) It would do short field with the best of them. My only bitch was at Annual time. Just exactly HOW MANY grease fittings are there on the electric landing gear? I had to replace most of the Zerk nipples as they had been "missed" over the years and were plugged badly.
Oh, and you know those snap covers that fit over the wing attachment bolts? Don't ever break one! You think double rifle stuff is expensive ...

Nice plane there Bonanza! I started flying while in High School. Gave it up throughout college then became a Navy Fighter Pilot flying the F/A-18 Hornet and instructing in the A-4 Skyhawk. Got 170 Carrier Traps, exactly 100 day and 70 night. I remember every one of the nights!!!
Last plane I flew was the B-767-300-ER. Got type rated in it and the 757. Also flew the F-100, B-727, B-737, and MD-80. Unfortunately lost my medical due to back issues in 04 but the Airline business isn't what it used to be.
Flying IS an expensive hobby but I've never met anyone who regretted spending the time and money to learn.

Hog pilot,
Went up yesterday and polluted the air with some lead at $5.60/gallon. My fun flights seem to get shorter and shorter.
I think the F/A 18 is one of the coolest jets around. I saw one at a demonstration flight and the slow high alpha pass is unbelievable. If I try that with my Bonanza it will overheat (exceed 400 F CHT) in a heartbeat. At full power I need a minimum of 120 mph for cooling. I can do slow flight (< 90 mph) at 60% with the gear up, but once the gear is down I better be landing or it takes too much power to overcome the drag. With a high performance piston engine heat management becomes very important if you expect to get any life out of the cylinders.
I love the 757. I think its the best looking airliner with those long landing gear and slender fuselage.

Right now, our Diesel fuel costs $5.85 per Imp. Gallon ($1.28/9 per liter. Regular gas is $5.44 (8cents per liter cheaper than diesel at $1.19/9 lt.) I think high test around $6.12 per gallon.
Those are on a 160 ounce gallon.
I dontknowwhat Av-gas is, but I'd think 100 OCT. would be round $1.50 per liter. - about $6.81 gallon - just a guess - $5.45 per US gallon. That's heavy!! Maybe AvGas is even higher here because out normal gas is higher than the US pricing - usually.
