      #198575 - 03/01/12 02:41 PM

Does anyone know what the muzzle dia of a .275 Rigby usually runs?

Allen

My .275 Rigby (Sackville Street ) measures 0.560 23,5 in long

The prewar Oberndorf Mauser 7x57 measures 0.570 24 in long

Would you mind measuring the barrel dia in front of the rear sight
just in front of the sight sleeve step?

I think I'm going to go with a muzzle dia of .570 & a 25" barrel.

Thanks, Allen

I have a Lothar Walther Contour #722 on my 7x57 (not a Rigby) with a muzzle diameter at 25" length of 0.650" and I sometimes think it is a touch heavy for a stalking rifle.

http://www.lothar-walther.de/268.php

I wanted that length though as it gives a longer sight radius when I use the open sights. (bead front and ghost rear sight on the rear scope base)

On the other hand:

I have the Contour #718 in .243W on my sons rifle. Muzzle is 0.591" and even with a 6mm hole (which makes the barrel thicker than one with a 7mm hole) it is waifer thin. Too thin IMHO and better suited to a specialised mountain rifle. It heats up quickly after only three shots in the higher pressure .243W.

If I was to build again I would try for a rifle with a 25" barrel of around 0.600" - 0.620" like the shilen #3 contour.

http://www.shilen.com/contours.html Note the barrel weights too.

I'll be using a LW contour #5130 with European spec blank, 1:8.7 twist & a 1.180 shank.

I had a couple of 8x57 barrels made with the #5130 contour with D1 .600, D2 .175, D3 .856, D4 .923 & D5 (shank) 1.180

I like them, but for the 7x57 I'm thinking .570-.575 for D1 - the muzzle.

The 404 Jeffery, Steve Button is working on now also has the #5130 contour @ 25".

I had Woody add .020 to all stations if i remember correctly which came out to a .650 muzzle dia instead of the .625 of the standard #5130 contour.

I should have some pics soon.

The 7x57 is on a FN Belgian, Husky action made in 1940 & the 404 on the same but made in 1939.

The 7x57 is done, with custom contoured (to look more pre war) SMP bottom metal, Huber Concepts single stage adjustable mil trigger & small Oberndorf bolt handle.

It's ready for barrel & sights. 1 standing & 2 folding banded rear sight, Rigby/Jeffery style island front sight & large sling eye island, not banded.

The action work is done on the 404, it has a large Oberndorf bolt handle. Barrel is there, just waiting for the 4MJ bottom metal, 4 down standard stock not drop box & sights & sling like the 7x57.

Basically a matched pair but the 7x57 is scaled slightly smaller.

They both have the charger hump left on, as they will be open sight guns only. Probably add a Lyman M48 on them later.

Scroll down and have a look at this custom safari sight set-up. The rear pedestal has one flip up leaf and the front has a flip up blade with ivory insert.

You might also want the taper per inch from the 275 barrels in question. Starting with the muzzle OD and then measuring the OD of the barrel 12" from the muzzle then divide by 12. Do the original Rigby barrels taper .006 per inch ?, .010 ? or are they straight ? I think this info would be helpful to you . Our barrels taper .012 or .006 per side for every inch form the muzzle to the transition of the parabola just ahead the shank. This taper is not very common among barrel makers as .006 to.008 seems to be the norm.

That makes two of us.

Should be a nice rifle.
