Rebore modern Win 95 from 30-06 to 35 Whelen?
      #198325 - 01/01/12 03:23 PM

Ok I have a Winchester Model 95 SRC in 30-06 enroute. It's one of the 2006 ones made in Japan. I'm contemplating having it rebored to 35 Whelen, The round has always intrigued me,plus I have a real nice Husqvarna in 30-06 already. What's the thoughts on this idea?

Sounds like a good idea to me. I am bit of a 358Cal fan. Just to show my bias. I would think that the 35Whelen would be better if you go after bear.

Go for it. I believe you can generally rebore the '06 barrels on the Japan 95's up to about .375. Sometimes you can get away with .411, but there is a hard spot under the front sight that is tough to recut. Not sure if your model has the brazed on front sight, but you should have no problem going to .358". This is all from my recollections of reading I have done on the topic...

If you are not afraid of going a little wild(cat). You might take a look at the Hawk cartridges. There is some info here http://www.z-hat.com/HawkContents.htm - the .375 Hawk/Scovill seems to be the most popular.

The .35 Whelen would be a great round for that lever gun.

The .375 Scovil uses .30/06 brass and the .375Hawke/Scovil uses a 9.3x62 case, I believe. Both pretty much duplicate my somewhat straigthened and shorter necked .375/06IMP which has an 80 gr. capacity using the .30/06 WW cases. Fed. and RP brass runs 78gr.

These rounds, if loaded to the .30/06's 62,000 SAAMI Pezio PSI, do not give up much or anything to a normal chronographed .375H&H factory load. My 300's run 2,474fps and the .270's easily do 2,650fps and with top loads, over 2,700fps using TSX bullets. I backed them off to 2,600fps due to being a mite uneasy over the ballistics I was recording. The 9.3x62 also does well over 2,600fps with 270gr., however there aren't any .366" 270gr. bullets of substancial enough build for those speeds.

So - .35 Whelen would be fun, 9.3x62 even more so.

I saw a sweet take down two barrel set for a 95 a few years ago. It was in 280 and 35 Whelen, with a nice case. I don't remember the price but do remember it was well beyond my means.

I think the combination of the 35 Whelen and the Winchester 95 is a pairing that should have been a standard offering. IMHO the 35 Whelen is the finest North American game round.

Great idea. I have been toying with the same idea only in 9.3x62.

I think the 9.3x62 would be better than the standard .35 Whelen - due to the 9.3's, 78gr. capacity in RWS brass.

If using WW .30/06 brass, the capacity would be 80gr., the same as the .376 Styer, which would be antother good choice.

Phil,

I think that would be an awesome pairing. I am a devoted Whelen fan though and would tend to lean more to the 35, 38 and 400 Whelen. Of course Winchester could just bring back the 35 Winchester and I'd fall into a swoon that could only be cured by the acquisition of said swoon inducer.

If reboring rather than replacing the barrel, the 35 Whelen would leave more meat in the steel than the 9.3 and would seem a more traditional calibre for an American model.

Make sure you get a fast twist able to handle heavier bullets than Remington put in their pump-actions, though.

Somebody had one of these for sale on gunbroker.com not too long ago (a standard 1895, not the SRC). I believe it was one of your neighbors in Alaska.

Years ago, I had a 35 whelen on a original 95. Worked o.k., but now being older and maybe wiser, I would prefer it in a modern 95. Great cartridge!
