Stunning but still baffled why anyone would order a rifle like that with the front bell housed in a ring if he didnīt have to ?? Itīs like discovering you are in bed with Jane Russel in 1950 and she had a metal bra on and a chastity belt. What reason ?? best, Mike p.s. still lovely

The objective bell mount is bizarr.

For scope removal purposes, the bell mount allows the scope to pivot out of the rear claw mount and still clear the rear sight, otherwise the scope mounts would have to be very tall if they were mounted to the tube.

Here is the difference between US and European approach in scope mounting.
When you use a quick detachable claw mount, you need to turn upside down the objective in order to put the front claws in their base, then the scope is lowered and the rear mount is automatically locked in the rear base.
If the customer wants a big scope - here it's a Z6 Swarovski 2,5-15x44 - you haven't other alternative than to put the front ring forward on the bell.
Indeed you could prefer a Talley type mount, but a good built claw one is faster and returns to zero repeatedly.
Even if it's a very consuming job to do and a costly option, European customers still prefer that kind of mount… sorry, but we like it too !
We make also English style side mounts, traditional old style Griffin & Howe (in steel), side swing Apel and Recknagel and a lot of Talley.
Thank you for your comments, they will help us.

Just completed the full color case hardening of the entire action.
That was done the old way and we have assembled the parts for the photos.

That is beautifully colour case hardened - but - does it not effect the hardness of the action and bolt when colour cased?

The only colour cased hardening I've observed, was with the parts (in a sealed vessel with bone & other carbon items, etc, heated to brilliant red heat then dunked into a bucket of cold water. Case hardening in itself is the addition of carbon into the metal's surface through soaking in immense heat, isn't it?

I assumed the above was the "old way". How could that be safely done to an action that is quite particular to it's hardness, if done the "old way"?. Would tempering after case hardening not injur the colours?

Will try to reply with my limited English....
In a Mauser action, the bolt, receiver and parts are made from a low alloy, medium-carbon, steel.
The color case hardening is a surface carbon cementation and it makes the carburized surface very hard, leaving the core relatively soft.
The hardening that is not very deep (no more than 1/10° of millimeter) gives a great resistance to wear and smooths the action.
The core of the treated parts, though and resilient, becomes more resistant and can stand hard use.
In fact, colors are an "accident" and in the past, they were washed with a solution of chloride acid, letting a soft grey finish know as "French grey".
Even if the method used now is the same than in the past, the use of electronic controlled ovens narrows the error margin.
Notice however that the newly hardened parts must be varnished to retain their vivid colors.

Thanks for the description on the method.

That finish is certainly vivid.

I like the stock design for a scoped rifle. Beautiful stock wood and nicely finished.

The checkering design in the wrist is new to me, not sure about that design, but that's merely one man's opinion.

Words cannot do justice to a masterpiece, Joel. Simply magnificent! Your client is one fortunate man - fine taste and a great artist to give shape to his tastes are a true fortune, indeed!
