El Jefe's 7x57
      #198302 - 01/01/12 11:34 AM

My apologies to my old friend Dr Asif for the delay in posting pics of his 7x57 rifle built in Australia by member AFRO 408. His description:

Quote [Hi Mehul, took a while , but here's my 7x57, its wearing a Hakko scope Just now, but will change to a Leupold 1-4x20 soon
The bare rifle is a Zastava Mod 70, stock is Boyds Walnut.
Bases are Weaver steel, PRW Leupold rings
Minimal stock work. The operative word with Tony, Afro 408, is muted elegance...Has a few coats of tru oil
Lugs were checked for bearing, feed is like a hungry, shark.Minimal trigger work done.Bedded and floated.
Load developed for 140-175 gr
The owner is my son, Amir, whose pic I'll send across next. Between us, we lechh at the guns in the latest gun-zines and decide what HE wants.] End Quote.

Since he's an old friend, I'm biased in his favor, but I doubt that anyone would disagree that he's bringing his son up right.

Good hunting, everyone!

Nothing else is needed if those two are in the gunrack. Having said that, once the NEEDS are taken care of, WANTS surface in their place. Let the fun begin.

Asif,

You need to bring your Jeffery double rifle from India to Australia, and get her fully restored. Just tell me that you don't want too hunt buffalo with her . . .

Some nice checkering would round that rifle off nicely.

It was out at the SSAA range on Sunday, elJeffe and it likes the 140g Berger HP's that you sent up. Just over the inch, without trying too hard.
Next bullet I plan to try, is the 160g Woodleigh PPSN.

No wandering zero with the replacement scope either.

Thanks Tony, Will be interesting to see how the Woody's do.Whats the load data for this load?Resized 8x57 cases?I must check with Forbes about some H mantle/equivalent RWS projjies
Mehul- The old beasty 450/400 double will need a new set of rear /front sights and its action as usual.
The rest of you kind folks-Thanks for the good words.Lets see where we can take it...Tony's 22LPI chequering by popular demand? think, think !

I have some 173 H-Mantles coming from Forbes. Should be here this week. I'll be testing them.

You're welcome mate. :-)

Load data for this load is:-
Yes, resized 8x57 cases, 46.5g 2209 behind the 140g Berger.

The 160 Woody load will be 43g of 2209.

With regards the checkering on this stock. The wood is Claro Walnut and is too soft to take 22 lpi checkering. I would recommend 18 or 20 as the finest.
The 404 stock wood is a lot harder and took the finer checkering well.

Asif and Tony, I would say you have clearly achived the goal of muted elegance. That is sensational. Full marks.

Vikram, Thats the owner-2 years ago, checking out 'Ol kamal, the kamel slayer'- back in Hervey Bay.

Tony, I hear you about the 22LPI...we'll plan something.
Rule,to think; I was tempted to get a very psychedelic, 'apache gold ' model from a popular stock manufacturer. Fortunately, as my old school motto goes, "Reverentia Jehovae est Caput Sapientiae"
( "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" ) prevailed, as did sense... May be an Old English red rubber style recoil pad?
John, Thats good news about the 173 grainers. Would appreciate your load build.I am saving a box of 7x57 cases from Forbes, and the 173 gr H Mantle will be a good load for it.
Mehul, I will be checking out the Jeff 450/400 double in a day or two and will post pics.
Cheers

Asif,

Thanks on the Jeffery double, buddy. I think she deserves to be redone and then put to the use that was intended of her by the Jeffery company when they handed her to your father.

I'll also say that from my limited understanding, there's no country like Australia to put her to the use that was intended of her. Good hunting and all the very best as always!

Testing went very, very well.

I would not use it on anything larger than Deer or Boar though.
