Aussie members - check out "The History of Safari"
      #198232 - 31/12/11 07:31 PM

Aussie members. Monday on channel 2:

"The History of Safari" by Richard E. Grant

Monday 8:30 pm ABC1

Probably going to be biased as it mentions "the bloody past" but we are starved of this sort of thing on TV in Oz, so worth pointing it out.

I'm fortunate in that my cable provider has 3 channels that show hunting and fishing shows alomost 24 hours a day, plus a golf channel, soccer channel, rugby, Australian rules football, plus another 6 or 7 channels that show our American team sports.

I find it doubly frustrating now that with all the streaming media devices like Apple TV and iPlayer, I still can't find one that will let me pay to watch the US cable channels like The Outdoor Channel and similar - though I notice the latter does at least say Australia is "coming" and has got Europe and some of Asia up and running already!

Gentlemen,

Seeing some of the US forums have continual whinge threads on the quality, or not, of the TV hunting shows, I wonder if we get them here, how long before us Aussies are complaining about all the "whitetail bubba backslapping shows"?

I think a series such as Ivan Carter's "Tracks Across Africa" would be cool to see oneday here.

It's on tonight so set the DVD just in case it's worthwhile

If nothing else, it's about Africa.....

Just saw most of it. Some good older footage and concentrated on the high end of the industry and lifestyle. There were certainly some magnificent trophys back then.

The presenter was more than a little 'self abusive'.

Hi John,

That was part one, part two next week, same time and channel. It was presented fairly well without bias which is a change for channel two.

He was born and raised there but could never kill animals like his father did but seemed to be re-living his childhood several times during the episode.

Lets see what next week brings forth.

Cheers Mate,

Jeff

Quite a lot of boring "self-guilt" by the presenter Richard Grant.

Overall not too bad but presented the high end of the historical safari, which was not the only end of the safari market. Lots of guys did it more ordinary as well. Especially the locals.

When discussing white colonialisation missed the point that a lot of the lands WERE empty in Kenya, though the Kikuyu like to claim all the empty land was theirs re-writing the history at the time. The Maasai were supposedly a reason a lot of land was not occupied having driven out or killed other tribes in a lot of areas. But of course the whites did take a lot of land which was also 'occupied'. Did mention the population at the turn of the century was 1.5 million but now 45 million so comparing now to then is a different perspective.

Overall not too bad.

Yes, I thought PH Tony Seth-Smith did a good job in explaining why things happened the way they did with no bullshit guilt.

I reckon the lion shot at a few feet was good but so much dross with the rest of the program was ordinary.

Yes quick reaction time for the lion. I think that there is a part 2 same time next week?

I reckon he is a well known TV presenter trying to placate his existing fans, thus the forelock tugging to satisfy the morons.

When discussing white colonisation ....

Just an aside point. One of the nicest environments I have ever been to was in the Highlands of Kenya. It is not hot, it is cool, when I was there about 13 to 16 deg C, lovely fresh crisp cool air. Beautiful scenery, lovely lands, though mountainous.

The best place I can remember of a place perfect to live.

No wonder the white colonists picked it as being the "white reserve" or "homeland" in Kenya for themselves in those days.

There are a few spots on the planet like that. In the tropics but tempered by altitude. As you said Nitro, beautiful.

Mt Hagen in PNG was like that. I enjoyed my time as a kid up there in the mid 60's. Just not the game animals.

Pity they didn't talk about Osa Johnson and her and her husbands adventures instead of just using her pretty picture when mentioning the "Happy Valley" shenanigans, completely out of context.
