Mauser sporter model?
      #197640 - 23/12/11 09:23 PM

Hi, I'm new to Mauser Obendorf sporters. What Model have I got here? It's in 7x57 and has been well looked after. Should make a nice rifle for Fallow & Reds. Grateful for any information. Thanks Spud

Beautiful rifle. I can never become too tired to see these Oberndorf Mausers popping up here and there.
Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas.

Very nice Mauser. It's a Type B, pattern No. 80. I like the Mauser Banner. Could you attach a picture of the left side of the receiver?

Nice looking rifle and definitely a post WW1 Type B. Great caliber, too.

Spud,

nice looking Germanic styled sporter. I like that schnabel styled stock too.

Thanks all for the info. That's a big help. Am I correct in assuming it was made post WW1 (square PG rather than a rounded one)?
The bore has cleaned up nicely and a field test is planned soon with some 140 gr Woodleighs.

This rifle has certainly rekindled my interest in Mauser sporters. I went searching for a suitable reference book & someone suggested "Mauser: Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles" by J. Speed. Unfortunately it is out of print & 2nd hand copies appear hard to get hold of. Is this really the case?

Per Jon Speed’s book, the Mauser Banner trademark first appeared on the receiver ring around 1924. The size and position of the Mauser Banner changed over the course of production.

On the left side of the receiver, you should have one of the following proof marks.

Commercial ‘BU’ proof marks 1898 – 1924
Commercial ‘BUG’ proof marks 1924 – 1934 Approx. SN range 87XXX – 111XXX
Commercial ‘BUGN’ proof marks 1934 – 19XX Approx. SN range 111XXX – 126XXX

Hope this helps.

Jim, thanks very much for those details. Serial number is 900XX with the BU proof mark. I finally got to see & hold the rifle yesterday and a deal was quickly struck!! The photos don't do it justice & thankfully the previous owners have certainly looked after it. Now the paperwork(!!)then some load development and hopefully it will be in the bush for the opening of the Fallow deer season here on March 1.
Spud.

That serial number puts the build date at 1924.
