S&W .455 Mk. II Hand Ejector 2nd Model #69234
      #197532 - 22/12/11 12:16 PM

In honor of all my friends from the UK and Commonwealth nations, I just thought I would display my Smith and Wesson .455 Mk. II 2nd Model. This one probably dates to 1917. Smith and Wesson made 59,150 of these for the British armed forces and 14,500 for Canada. A few commercial gun were produced, of which this is one. This example has no martial markings or proof marks at all. All finishes are original.

Curl;

That is one of my favorite all-time revolvers. It is one I've always wanted to get to USE. I've handled them but them shot one. They float in the hand.

Very similar to my 29-9 and the reason I bought that revolver.

Thanks for posting.

That s simply a beautiful gun, working art that will never again be made.

Let's all think about it...

These guns were used in BOTH World Wars.

Great thread. Especially for those of us who will never own such a wheelgun!

Nice!!

Must say though, I'd never to to that revolver what I do daily to my little airweight.
Still I'd never kick this 455 out of my stash!

Cheers

Lovely. They are a lot of fun to shoot, but like the Colt, require a fairly large mitt for accurate double action work. It's a long way from the backstrap to the trigger. To reach the trigger with enough finger for DA and with the backstrap lined up with the arm bone, takes a long trigger finger.
Try it, Curl, see what happens.

This isn't to belittle the revolver - it's an wonderful piece and a pleasure to shoot, DA or SA.

I visited a gunshop down in Alabama back in 1987 that had one in a prestine condition like this one pictured here. $200 what it costed back then..I bought a M28 S&W .357Magnum instead for $200..(thatīs all I had with me)
Still love to have one even today..Later I sold the S&W to rally up money for a Trans AM..= Stupid

Thank you, and welcome to NE.com. I see this is your first post. I'm glad to have the opportunity to extend a welcome. Please join in to liven up the various discussions on these boards.

Your moniker touches on one of my favorite topics, but are you also a S&W buff?

Curl,

Thank you and I look forward to engaging in some discussions regarding my passion for double rifles.

Certainly, a fine S&W revolver is something to admire as well as appreciate!

Best,

sxsrifle

these are still fairly common in Canada. I have one I bought from a Gunshop in Ontario about 3 years ago. It is not as nice as the one above, mine is maybe an 85% gun, but it came with the Original owners holster. According to the Gunshop the Original owner was an officer in WW1. The most interesting feature is 3 notches carved in the grips!

Nice looking revolver. Does yours have any martial stamps?

no marks. As far as I know all the Smiths sold to Canada at the beginning of WW1 were commercial models.

Officers in the Canadian Army had to purchase their own kit, including their pistola. If an Officer could afford to buy the pistol outright he was sold an unmarked revolver. If he needed to purchase it on time installments, he was sold a C broad arrow marked pistol, and when he mustered out the his pistol was marked as surplussed out and given back to him.

buckbrush - why the rods in the tubes?

The holsters my brother and I packed whilst in the Force, were quite similar to yours. They easily took a spit shine - very nice leather indeed.

Daryl, they are pin gauges. I was taking bore and throat dimensions for a survey of .455's on the Cast Boolit website. We are doing a Mihec group buy of a 4 cavity , Brass, Hollow Base mould.

tks - was wondering.
I'd expect the bore dimension as shown by a guage in the tube itself is of little use, of course. It's the chamber mouth and groove diameter that is importand - less so the groove diameter as long as it is thesmae size or better yet, a thou or two smaller than the chamber mouth. This 'goes' for all revolvers.imho

Beautiful handgun and very nice photography. I especially like the photo with the cylinder loaded and open.

Simply beautiful, Curl. Most people don't realize how much hand work and fitting went in to the internals of these older Smiths. For one reason, they don't work well unless the tolerances are just right. Their action simply has a butter smooth quality to it that's lacking in newer Smiths as they come from the factory. The double action won't necessarily be light, but there will be almost no creep. Thanks again for sharing!

Very nice. I've only found one of the .455 S&W 44 frame revolvers over the years and it was in very poor shape. You've got a very nice example there.
